18 Songs for Martin Luther King Day
January 18th 2010 22:36
Hello all and welcome to the first edition of Muzikal Mafia's holiday playlist. In case you missed it, we, here at Muzikal Mafia, have decided to publish monthly playlists in order to introduce our readers to new (and old) music. Basically, every month andon the occasional holiday we'll post a random list of songs which we feel people should check out. On those lists, there will be both mainstream and non-mainstream tracks.
We start today with 18 songs for Martin Luther King Day and I gotta tell ya, making that list wasn't easy. A first, I wanted to put only rap songs but I quickly realized that taking this approach led me away from my goal, which is to broaden everybody's (rap lovers and rockers alike) musical horizons. I then decided to list political songs but I came to the conclusion that other dates were more fitting for the political stuff. Then, I thought about putting any song which had a title, lyric, or vibe that could be associated with MLK's death and/or the South in general. The final result is a mishmash of all those ideas put together. You got some rap songs, some rock, some political stuff, some random stuff, and three french songs to add some international flavor. Keep in mind, I didn't want this list to be only about MLK, but about hope, life, love, social justice, and so on. Enjoy!
"MLK" is a beautiful ambient track and I rate it among U2's best songs. It's a pretty short track (2:34) but poetic all the same.
A cover of ABBA's hit of the same name, "I Have A Dream" by Westlife was very successful in the UK where it reached the number one spot and stayed there for a significant number of weeks.
"18th Floor Balcony" is one of those random tracks that made its way onto the list. A beautiful rock ballad.

Per Wikipedia: Metallica's And Justice For All's lyrics "refer to the act of social injustice, in which "Lady Justice" is "raped"."
Justice Is Lost,
Justice Is Raped,
Justice Is Gone.
I originally wanted to keep this song for another playlist (9/11 in particular) but it was too good to pass up especially considering the tragedy going on in Haiti right now. The bridge alone is worth a spot on any playlist.

Another song that could've been on a 9/11 playlist. "The Cause Of Death" is one of many Immortal Technique tracks about 9/11, the Bush administration and the Illuminati.
Staind's biggest song to date, "It's Been Awhile" is a great rock track that I randomly chose for this list.
One of my most favorite tracks to listen to lately, ""John the Revelator" is a traditional Gospel/blues call and response song. In the chorus, John of Patmos, the traditional author of the Book of Revelation, is writing "the book of the seven seals." At the time of the song's composition (and in modern times), John of Patmos was generally considered the same person as John the Apostle and John the Evangelist." (Wikipedia)
Made famous by the HBO series "True Blood," "Bad Things" is a great Southern rock track. The first video is the original track and the second is the "True Blood" opening sequence.
"Feel Like Home" is one of the few tracks of the "rap-only" playlist that I kept. Fort Minor Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda's side-project. It didn't get too much attention on its release so I thought I'd put on of his tracks on the list.
"Rθglement Exterieur" is the first French track of the list. It's basically a French "Code of the streets" rap song.
I don't like Lil' Wayne but this is a great song about life on the streets.
"What I've Done" is the first single of Linkin Park's Minutes To Midnight, a great rock anthem.
Michael Jackson. 'Nuff said.
"Break My Heart" is one of the "rap-only" tracks that I kept. It's a smooth song with a nice beat.
"La Paix des Braves" is the second French rap song of this list. With Algonquin rapper Samian, and "Quιbιcois" trio Loco Locass, it's a song about settling the differences between the two races and just be brothers.
The final French rap song, "La Traversιe du Lac Nasser" is a great rap song in which Manu Militari preaching openness towards the Muslims' way of life.
We conclude the list with the arena-rock anthem "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi. One of the band's most successful single, "it was credited with reviving their career after they came off a five year break, during which they each pursued individual solo careers. It was also credited with introducing the veteran band to an entirely new, younger audience." (Wikipedia)
That wraps it up for today. There won't be a playlist for the month of January itself, so our next playlist should be on Valentine's Day. Expect 14 songs achingly sweet love songs. Meanwhile we're working on some reviews (Eminem, Westlife, Clipse and maybe Snowgoons) so be on the lookout for those as well.
