Muzikal Mafia - November 2006

I have kept my mouth shut about the breakup and Britney's 'new old look'. I have kept my mouth shut about K-Fed and all the unfortunate child abuse-ish events. I have shut up about hair extensions and black roots, and white trashiness. Mainly, because if I say something about Br*tney S*ears, google jumps all over it and plasters her shit all over my site, which I cannot stand. I don't want to give her any type of notice all on this site.

However, enough is enough. This girl has been absolutely crucified in the press for the last two years. She gained weight, lost it, gained weight...wait...no...oh that's right, she was too dumb to read the instructions on the spermicide and used it in her mouth instead. I digress...

My point is that she has been blasted, she fell from grace, she has been the butt of more jokes than well...a dumb blonde...guess she was a twofer, huh?

This is what pisses me off.

We all know these things. We know she is a liar, a horrible singer, a dumbass, and obviously suffers from massive self-esteem issues from posts like this one...(ha)

So, what happens?

The media. That's what happens. We loved her at first because the media did...she was plastered all over the place, so we loved her after some not so subtle brainwashing of radio and magazines...as a result, her sales went through the roof...and Britney was a massive hit.

She grows up, (physically, I'm saying, and no, I am not referring to THOSE), she gets married and really lets her true self shine. The media hated her for it. They lost sales, their darling was suddenly trashy. Well, not suddenly...but you know what I mean and the trashiness had a name...K-Fed.

So, gone went the looks, out came the babies, and Britney was dangerously close to being a Jerry Springer Special.

We hated her. All was right with the world. We labeled her a nontalent. Yes. The public had taste again. NOW look what's happened!

She files for divorce, lost a bit of weight and all of a sudden, in a two week span, mass media is starving to get 'it' back...the Britney they made sooooo much money off of. So, out comes the mass media plan to get Britney back in our good graces.

She cuts her hair and wears sexy clothes again. She is blonde again. She is tanned again. She has been out every night with who else? Paris. Suddenly, there are magazine articles talking about how intelligent she is, what a business sense that she had that prenup. Like she even read it! She signed on the damn line with what I am guessing was an X or close to it.

Come on, people. She sucks. She will always suck. But it isn't even that she is getting some positive press that really irritates me. It's that people fall for it without question. Does it not strike you odd that two weeks ago, you laughed at that joke someone told about her and today you are admiring her haircut? You are nodding affirmatively that she is going to make a comeback?

Here is the last thing I am going to say -(almost)...question everything...accept nothing that doesn't make sense. Britney's miracle two week comeback, doesn't make sense.

This sort of thing drives me absolutely crazy. (Can you tell, because I am going for subtle here.)

There are so many brilliant artists out there who can't get the time of day but Britney can. WHY? There is no talent there, folks. NONE. She has a brilliant publicist. There is the talent. Britney doesn't even know what key she sings in. She doesn't. My hand to God, I heard her say that in an interview.

Okay, people. Here is your chance. This time and this time ONLY, if you have something to say about Spears, say it. If it's good, I will have to deal with it. I just need to know...WHY? Why do we -(you)-like her? Why is she making a comeback? Is she talented? Is she an artist. (ok I am going to be honest here...if anyone says she is an artist, I will delete your comment. Well, no I won't but I will cry a little.)

All Things Lenny Kravitz...

November 26th 2006 04:52
Lenny Kravitz - Wikipedia

He's a household name but do we really like him? He is an amazing musician, has a powerful voice and can rock with the best of them. But as I was listening to some of his music today, it occurred that I haven't heard that much about him, especially on Muzikal Mafia. I have not heard his name mentioned on any post so far, except for lovely DuskDevi, who mentioned him only for his drummer, Cindy Blackman. and Homer, who mentioned Kravitz's song 'Mr. Cab Driver.'

Kravitz started out 'letting love rule' in 1989 and I think maybe he was written off as a flake with the dreds -(which I LOVE, btw)-and his retro sound and hippie-esque lyrics. Since then, he has released 7 albums in addition to a Greatest Hits CD. Every once in awhile, I will pull some of his music out. Everytime I do, I am blown away by his talent.

Even though I make jokes about him all the time regarding how sexy he is and how I wished he would drop that towel again in that one video, this man is extremely talented.

He not only sings, Kravitz plays a helluva guitar-(heavily Hendrix influenced)-, bass, drums, piano, saxophone, trumpet and sitar. He also usually plays all the instruments on each recorded track, as well as writes most of his lyrics, in addition to numerous other behind the scenes involvement in other artist's albums.

I have his first Greatest Hits CD and it has everything on it from 'American Woman' (That grunt during the intro is GREAT. I could listen to it on a loop.), 'Black Velveteen' -(I still have no idea if he is singing about a woman, a robot or a sex toy. But I love that song.), 'Let Love Rule' to 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' -(I love the part, "So tell me why we got to die
And kill each other one by one, We´ve got to love and rub-a-dub, We´ve got to dance and be in love...") And what I want to know is...

Why do we not hear more of him? Every once in a great while, he has a song that get's some airtime, the most recent song, 'Lady' gained notoriety more for Sarah Jessica Parker's booty shaking GAP commercial than it did for being a great song. Am I the only one who thinks this is bizarre? Is he just overlooked? Is he one of those artists that refuses to be categorized? His lyrics are generally clean enough for air time, not that 'dirty' lyrics are particularly a problem anymore, anyways.

What's the deal? Why do we not hear a lot more from Lenny? Do you like him? Own any of his work? Do you hate him? Why?

WHY, Chris Daughtry...WHYYYYY???

November 25th 2006 00:32
I went to the CD section...I looked...I found and I bought the self-titled, debut album of Daughtry. Remember him? He was fourth runner up on that one reaaaallly successful show. I swore to myself I would never use that show title -(American Idol)- in conjunction with his name. I watched him, I loved him and I prayed for him to LOSE. Daughtry's sound was old and new, hard and heavy, and his voice...don't even get me started on his voice! I didn't want money-grubbing AI to get ahold of him and use him all up before his career even started. (Hello, does anyone even know where Ruben is? and why does Clay look like a pedophile now? 'Nuff said.)

So, all the way to the cash register, I kept thinking, "I have it!" I couldn't wait to get into my previously mentioned uncool minivan and take a listen. I slid in to the passenger side, making my husband drive. I slipped the CD from the case...I slid it into the CD player...and I heard...rock ballads. A collection of songs about relationships.

'Daughtry', Chris Daughtry-Wikipedia

This CD is not the sound, the promise, that he sold to his fans on the show. We voted for Chris singing passionate, intense songs from Creed and Fuel.

While I expected that Chris would do his own thing and not mimic the exact style of the groups he blew us away with, I expected something different than what I got. Something with more of an edge to it. There is NO edge to this CD, whatsoever. The only song that resembles the Chris Daughtry I fell in love with on AI, was 'What I Want', which features Slash from Guns N' Roses, and the highlight of that song is the guitar. You do the math. All the other songs blend into one another.

Some may be thinking that this is his first CD, that the label forced him to sing these songs. No. All songs on the CD were written by Chris -(at least partially)- except for 'What About Now', and 'Feels Like Tonight', which can only mean that we can expect more of the same in the future.

Another thing that bothers me about this CD, is that I did not expect to listen to a bunch of damn love songs. Even the harder tracks are about relationships of some kind. This is not a promising start. So much of music today is dedicated to sex and relationships. I was hoping that Chris would delve deeper. Pour out his soul to us a bit, let us come in and get to know him on an intimate level. I expected maybe a little sexuality...Chris is a sexy man and I figured they would throw some in to sell him to the female market but I didn't expect his lyrics to be weak and his songs to all sound so much alike. This CD is cold. There is nothing of Chris in it. Nothing personal.

Although the CD is about topics I don't really care for, I am touched by the story of Chris and his wife and kids. I expected to be touched by something. I expected him to make me feel a little happy, sad, something. But I may as well have been listening to a public service announcement for the feelings this CD stirred up.

On a positive note, I can say that his overall sound is unique. I can't pinpoint any particular influence. His vocal range is better and more controlled. He also wrote most of the lyrics, and although I don't like them for the most part, I have to give him kudos on that.

'Daughtry', Chris Daughtry track listing:

'It's Not Over"
'Used To Be'
'Home'
'Over You'
'Crashed'
'Feels Like Tonight'
What I Want'
'Breakdown'
'Gone'
'There and Back Again'
'All These Lives'
'What About Now?'

LYRICS RATING: 1/5
MUSIC RATING: 3/5
VOCALS: 3.5/5
OVERALL: Disappointed.

Here's to the future and that it brings music that Chris is capable of. This man has a lot of potential and an amazing talent. He needs to harness it. I want to be made to feel something, identify with him, feel like I know him. I can only hope the next CD is better.

Do you like Chris Daughtry? Do you have this CD and if so, did you like it? Let me know what you think...

MATURE CONTENT

One person who irritates me in music today, (no, it isn't Britney), is Kanye West. I cannot tell you the amount of irritation I feel right now at even typing his name. When his shit-(no other word for it)- comes on the radio, it is turned off faster than you can say, "brokety-broke".

This irritation was not helped with Kanye's recent hissy fit at the European Music Awards over his loss for Best Video. Now, I know all of you have seen it and read it and are probably sick of it. But, I thought I should include a pic of it here just in case someone had fallen off the face of the earth

I went cruising last night. Can you believe that? I am 34 and I went cruising with my friend listening to all the greats derived from the Seattle sound.

The Seattle sound originated with the 'Godfathers of Grunge', Neil Young -(I was a bit surprised by this bit of trivia until my friend
Neil Young-Wikipedia
LethalPiano pointed it out and I did some digging)- and to 'Green River', allegedly named after the Green River serial killings, whose members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament started jamming a bit with members of 'Malfunkshun', Andy Wood and Regan Hagar. That musical collaboration then became 'Lords of the Wasteland', which was later renamed 'Mother LoveBone'. There are other major players in the beginnings of this genre, as well

Who Was Your First?

November 4th 2006 22:14
I remember being very young, maybe ten or 11...I had always listened to music because my brothers were older than me by 3 and 6 years. Their music was not anything I loved or had to have. My brother's cassette player had eaten his cassette of Metallica in what I consider to this day as a direct answer to prayer. He had pulled the tape out in shreds, so that we could at least listen to the radio.

The first song that I heard was 'Rhythm of the Night' by DeBarge. I LOVED that song. I always squealed when I heard it on the radio. I begged my mother to get the 45 for me for Christmas. Yes, you read that right, the 45. I got it for Christmas and that, my friends, was the beginning of my music collection.

What's Your Pleasure?

November 3rd 2006 00:14
I do not know as much as some people do...I can't tell you all of the members names of Alice in Chains. I can't tell you who the drummer is that plays in that band I don't know. There is a lot about music that I don't know.

What I do know...is that music is the greatest pleasure of my life. I may not know the name of a song that fits a particular situation in someone's life or my own for that matter. But I know that when I hear a new artist (to me), that I am so passionately excited I have to share it with everyone...my mom, my daughter who couldn't care less if it isn't the top 40, my friend who is ladders and tiers above me in music knowledge, my co-workers...you.

Have you ever seen a man's soul lain bare on an alter or heard God speak directly to a man and bring him to his knees? Have you ever heard the voice of an angel?

Now...
Jonny Lang's new CD, 'Turn Around', is available in stores now. For fans of previous work, this is a different Jonny than you will be used to. Apparently, this young man has been through some rough times since he burst into the music scene at the age of 15, with his grammy nominated, ‘Lie to Me’. Whatever he has gone through, he is now grateful for his salvation from what he called a very dark time in his life, in several places on, 'Turn Around.'
