All Things Lenny Kravitz...
November 26th 2006 04:52
He's a household name but do we really like him? He is an amazing musician, has a powerful voice and can rock with the best of them. But as I was listening to some of his music today, it occurred that I haven't heard that much about him, especially on Muzikal Mafia. I have not heard his name mentioned on any post so far, except for lovely DuskDevi, who mentioned him only for his drummer, Cindy Blackman. and Homer, who mentioned Kravitz's song 'Mr. Cab Driver.'
Kravitz started out 'letting love rule' in 1989 and I think maybe he was written off as a flake with the dreds -(which I LOVE, btw)-and his retro sound and hippie-esque lyrics. Since then, he has released 7 albums in addition to a Greatest Hits CD. Every once in awhile, I will pull some of his music out. Everytime I do, I am blown away by his talent.
Even though I make jokes about him all the time regarding how sexy he is and how I wished he would drop that towel again in that one video, this man is extremely talented.
He not only sings, Kravitz plays a helluva guitar-(heavily Hendrix influenced)-, bass, drums, piano, saxophone, trumpet and sitar. He also usually plays all the instruments on each recorded track, as well as writes most of his lyrics, in addition to numerous other behind the scenes involvement in other artist's albums.
I have his first Greatest Hits CD and it has everything on it from 'American Woman' (That grunt during the intro is GREAT. I could listen to it on a loop.), 'Black Velveteen' -(I still have no idea if he is singing about a woman, a robot or a sex toy. But I love that song.), 'Let Love Rule' to 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' -(I love the part, "So tell me why we got to die
And kill each other one by one, We´ve got to love and rub-a-dub, We´ve got to dance and be in love...") And what I want to know is...
Why do we not hear more of him? Every once in a great while, he has a song that get's some airtime, the most recent song, 'Lady' gained notoriety more for Sarah Jessica Parker's booty shaking GAP commercial than it did for being a great song. Am I the only one who thinks this is bizarre? Is he just overlooked? Is he one of those artists that refuses to be categorized? His lyrics are generally clean enough for air time, not that 'dirty' lyrics are particularly a problem anymore, anyways.
What's the deal? Why do we not hear a lot more from Lenny? Do you like him? Own any of his work? Do you hate him? Why?

Did you know that it is suspected that Madonna broke up their marriage? Madonna's cover hit of Lenny's, "Justify My Love", broke out and Lenny and Lisa broke up, while during the split, Madonna and Lenny heated up...'Tis true.
They have a beautiful daughter together, Lisa and Lenny, named Zoe. She is absolutely one of the most beautiful young women on the planet. She looks like royalty! One can only hope she was blessed with Lenny's chops.
Lenny is also blamed for destroying the Cosby show. When Lenny and Lisa started seeing each other, that is when her character on Cosby started changing drastically to a more boho look. There were some pretty heated and uncomfortable situations that occurred after her involvement and marriage to Kravitz. That is why her character was written out of the show.

As for Lisa's turn around on Cosby, I can only say this: I don't believe we can blame him, even if it was his influence she was expressing. We make our own choices and if she chose to alter her character, then she has to be responsible for it.

I agree about Lisa. Everyone blamed Lenny for that and her evolution did occur at that time but she became involved.
I agree..but he obviously had a tremendous amount of influence over her during that time, which came across in the decisions she made. But you are right, she is responsible for them, not Lenny. I have always been surprised that we have not seen more from her.

Oh I loved her look. I remember the first time I seen her with the really long hair and the hippie clothes, I was just thrilled to bits! I made my mom come in to see her and I said, "If I could push a button, that is what I would look like." To which she replied, "Well, I would have a lot of explaining to do to your father if you did."

LOL Gotcha. There has always been a raving boho in my heart that has longed to get out and stretch her legs a bit...

It does seem that when he gets a hit it is just EVERYWHERE. But I still listen to his stuff over and over. I just get in a mood for Lenny...

I don't know where Lenny's gone, but I love his sound. Whenever he's on the radio, yes, it gets cranked. Cranked... spoken like an old geezer...
Thank you for this trip down memory lane.
Now I think he should Come back!

It is rumored that he bought the rights to a Jimi Hendrix film and plans on playing the lead...It would be like...I don't know...peanut butter and chocolate...like a match made in heaven, I say!
I don't think he has gone anywhere. He is like the beautiful vase you walk by everyday and don't see until someone moves it and suddenly it looks different and catches your eye. He is always there behind the scenes doing something with his gifts.
Just the other day I seen a pic of him with his very lovely daughter with Lisa Bonet, at a fashion show...apparently daddy spends the big bucks for Zoe...*smile* It made me love him more, I think!

Well, I hope the rumor is true. I'm in!
I'll have to look for that pic since I'd love to see his daughter. I have to say I felt badly when he and Lisa broke up. I try not to feel badly about Hollywood 'endings' but a few always stand out, that was one.

Ask and ye shall receive...
Rumor also has it that Zoe is a wild child. There are pictures all over the net of her slamming back a 40 when she was only 14. Unfortunately, she is a child of celebrities and she will be hounded...you would think if these kids are going to party it up they would rent a hotel room or something...not do it at a nightclub with a bunch of photographers near by...
And if you will notice Lenny's shirt...I think it is an omen...I definitely am changing my sign off...

It's so odd to hear Mr Cool himself asking Mick if he wants a cup of tea, as he goes off and makes them both one. It's a great moment. He's such a rockstar, from his music to his house. Everything. But enjoys a cup of tea apparently.

No I haven't seen it...I would love to, though. Tea? See? It's that sort of unpredictability that endears him to fans, I think. He came out totally hippie, and then came out rocking like Hendrix, and you never know what he will do...he always surprises you. Thanks for the info! I will check that out.
