Blast From The Past Vol. 5 - Part I: Eazy-E - Eternal E Album Review
December 4th 2008 03:43
This month on Blast From The Past – Eazy-E, Motorhead, and Michael Jackson.
Release date: November 28, 1995
Genre: Gangsta rap, West Coast hip hop
Length: 58:03
Label: Ruthless Records
Known as one of the founders of gangster rap from the N.W.A. Crew, the deceased Eazy-E is the epitome of the raw gangster rapper you don't hear these days. Ranked among the rap legends, he doesn't disappoint on Eternal E, a compilation of his work including great songs such as Boyz-N-The-Hood, 8 Ball, We Want Eazy, and many more.
The album starts with Boys-N-The-Hood (Remix). This is the kind of song you bang in your lowrider, just rolling down the street. The beat is sort of a little dark gangster rhythm and the snare just hits hard. And that track is BANGING. This song was originally written by rapper Ice Cube.
8 Ball (featuring N.W.A.) follows. The beat is vintage Dr. Dre – funk mixed with gangster. sounded funk mix with gangster, hard to explain but nice, produced by Dr Dre.Eazy E puts his gat, bitch and getting drunk lyrics.Nothing to crazy about this track, just another banger.
The third song is Eazy Duz It. It starts with a girl singing, then Eazy disses her – funny stuff. This track's beat isn't the gangster kind like the two previous songs. Eazy Duz It is a little smoother and cool. This song is cool but not that impressive. It was written by MC Ren.
Eazy-er Said Than Dunn (featuring Dr. Dre) is just smooth and relaxing with the bass line. Eazy's voice matches perfectly with the beat. You can listen to this song non-stop with an easy but nice chorus. This song had no cursing in it just so it could be played as a single on the radio.
No More ?'s (featuring Ice Cube) was a bit weird with a fast pace, but the instruments started to get annoying on the beat. Then, at the second verse, Eazy started to rap like he was cruising a lady – smooth voice and all. That switched up the beat a little. It became calmer.
We Want Eazy (featuring N.W.A. and The D.O.C.) has a sort of chillin'-at-the-party beat. The bass line is sick. The chorus is a great hook with Dr. Dre controlling the crowd, making them scream “Eazy.”
Nobody Move (featuring MC Ren) has a weird beat in a great kind of way. This song is like a happy gangster track, and Eazy's voice is nice with it. I don't know why, but somehow you can't hate this song.
Radio also features MC Ren, and sounds really old-school. I know the album is old-school, but this one is different from the others, it's alright.
Only If You Want It (featuring Naughty By Nature) is sick with Eazy's rhymes killing the mic. The flow is sick, the beat is sick; it sounds like a party beat but also gangster. The chorus is funny, and a great hook.
Neighborhood Sniper features Cold 187um and Kokane. Once again, the beat sounded gangster except this time, it felt like it was put on reverse. Eazy rapped to slow on this one, making the song a little bit boring. Plus, the beat was only average.
I'd Rather Fuck You (featuring N.W.A. and CPO Boss Hogg) is the love song to get high to. I totally hated Eazy's voice in this track. You could say he was singing, but he doesn't know how to sing, so I really hated this song.
Automobile (featuring N.W.A.) is just hilarious as hell with the old-school comic beat and Eazy singing. It sounded like a happy version of a Western soundtrack. You have to hear it to believe it. Even though it's stupid, the song is simply too funny.
Niggaz My Height Don't Fight (featuring Kokane) is fast-paced, but it was nice and cool. You can listen to this song while walking in the street, nodding your head the whole time.
Eazy Street features Dr. Dre and is the last song of the album. I think it ends the album well - not too much of a banger, but not too much of a singer either. This is the Eazy-E we all now and love – just chill and cool.
So, I give this album a 7.5/10. Some songs were crazy but the rest was pretty ordinary, nothing impressive, but a good album overall. Dr. Dre's production had nice bass lines. Every song was different, not only because of the beats, but also because Eazy tried to fit his voice to match every beat perfectly. I was surprised by his range of rapping tones, which is always a great thing.
