Christmas Mood Music...Who Is Your Pick?
December 4th 2006 01:24
No pretty pictures or catchy titles, just short and to the point today...that's not always a bad thing!
'Tis the season and all that...I was digging through my music collection for my Christmas music and it got me to thinking about how music can set moods, it can release emotions and how we turn to it in times of need, intentionally or not. How integrated it is in our lives. It made me thankful for the talent, the art and the drive of the artists who do what they do so that we may enjoy it.
The music I have to listen to every year is Anne Murray. I don't even know which Christmas album it is of hers, but it has just become, without intention, my family's official music of Christmas. One year, my husband and I didn't have much money and I picked it up just to have some holiday music. To this day, nearly 14 years later, it is still our pick out of all the possibilities. It is sentimental for Jeff and I because it reminds us of leaner times and reminds us of how far we have come. For our children, they have grown up listening to the same CD every year, there is NO other music in their opinion.
What is your must have christmas music, if any? Who do you enjoy? What type of music does it for you on Christmas? Funny, sad, classic? What is the one Christmas song you have to hear and who has to sing it?

What? No 'Dreaming of a White Christmas'? lol I can't imagine it being hot at Christmas. It is so cold here right now. I think we are in for it this year. Feels horribly cold to me already and we haven't even had a good proper first snow, yet!
I have never heard the song you mentioned. I will have to check that out.
Ok back to the hot Christmas thing...how do you cope with that? I think I would run around with ice in all my unmentionables just to have a little chill. I would miss the cold at Christmas. That's the only time though.

*searching through my Christmas music to see if its all there* whew! There for a sec, I thought you had jacked my Christmas stash! lol I have every one of those in my collection. I love them all, Harry Connick is one of my fave faves. Love him! Also love Manheim...that is just beautiful music, too. I just added Martina McBride's 'White Christmas' CD this weekend to the mix. It's great, too.

Anything sung by that man is pure honey.
I think I go a little crazy around Christmas here. And do I end up hugging a frozen cooler cube to my chest.

Awwwww. Alright, give me your addy. I am fed-exing the following:
2 cans of spray snow
1 snow tipped Christmas tree
1 doz. snowballs (of the snow kind, not the 'Hostess' kind)
1 doz. icicles (of the ice kind not the tree decorating kind)
1 DvD of: The Christmas Story
1box of hot cocoa
1 ea. snowsuit, mittens, hat, and scarf
1 snow shovel
and finally...
1 gigantic snowcone maker that shoots shaved ice all over your lawn and house, causing you to fall, and otherwise be injured, just like real snow.
LaurenD, if it is any consolation whatsoever I only want snow for Christmas and that is it. One year just recently, it was the mildest winter I have ever experienced for sure. The only real snow we got that was relatively heavy started on Christmas Eve and lasted until the day after, when it promptly melted. It was the best Christmas!
I just hate driving in it. I am the biggest coward!

Can't pick just one artist, though there's one by Aaron Neville that is called "Louisiana Christmas Day" that I really like from his "Soulful Xmas" album, & I like all the songs from that particular album. It's not a traditional song, but catchy & one u wanna get up & dance to. I tend to have favorite artists for certain songs, as follows; Stevie Nick's version of Silent Night; The Eurythmics version of Winter Wonderland; John C. Mellencamp's version of I Saw Mommy Kissing santa Clause; I like The Chirstmas Song " by a good many singers, including Johnny Mathis, Luther Vandross, Dean Martin, Bing, Nat King Cole & many others. I have non-traditional favorites, like Elton's "Step into Christmas"; and The Eagle's "Please Come Home for Christmas". It's not just romantic, but it's such a beautifully done song. Instrumentally, as I'm in the kitchen baking pumpkin rolls & making Xmas candy, I will generally have Manhiem Steamroller in the cd player, along w/The Trans-Siberian Orchestra & a cd w/ multiple artists, for some variety. I have a fairly good collection of Xmas music, even some w/a Celtic twist to it. Anne Murray's is likely in my collection also, but I haven't dug that deep in the bowels of my entertainment center for quite some time, & I'm sure the dust bunnies have hidden Anne from my view......
Anyhow, as with the rest of my music collection, I like a good variety of singers & sounds for the holidays.

You are the second person to mention that album! I have got to check that out. I love listening to lots of different types of music, but when it comes to Christmas, Anne Murray just does it for me...But I love that so many people have such different tastes in their Christmas music. I think every family probably has a 'soundtrack' to their Christmas. *smile*
What, if anything, was the pick in your house when you were putting up the decorations years ago?

Generally, I cant stand Christmas music but I do LOVE "This Christmas", I heard it over and over on the plane to South Africa years ago and I just loved the lyric-
"This Christmas I gave you my heart,
But the very next day you gave it away
This year to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special"
I enjoyed it even though it was *cough, cough* Human Nature *cough* who sung it (I dont know if you're Australian or not?) and this year I am in LOVE with the "Jimmy Eat World" version on my iPod.

ohhh I love that one too! I haven't heard the Jimmy Eat World version.
You know what other song I like that is just great, Madonna has done the best version I have heard so far, of 'Santa Baby'. Too cute!
On a different topic, that picture you have is adorable. Says a lot about you...all good things..

I have a friend who was working in a toy store on Xmas Eve a few years ago. Her boss went home but not before locking his office, where the CD player was pumping Xmas tunes throughout the shop. Anyway, the CD player got to "Last Christmas" by George Michael, and then started skipping, so the song played on a loop for something close to ten hours. Her and her workmates tried to break the door down to stop the torture, but to no avail.
To this day, when my friend hears that song, she crawls into a foetal position and cries for her mummy. Christmas music can be brutal.

That is GREAT! Oh my god, couldn't they call the man and try to get him back to the store or call security...or a SWAT team? Something? Those poor shoppers...*still laughing*
Come back, as always...I have missed you. I know your other gig must be taking a lot of your time but you are missed here at Muzikal Mafia.

To answer your question, about what we listened to years ago.....when I was a kid, there wasn't really anything in particular. As my own children were growing up, it was then that we listened to Anne Murray, because she was a favorite of my then-husband, & myself (saw her in concert, & she was great; she's funny, & a magician, to boot!). Next in line to her would've been Elvis & Kenny Rogers, though as the children got older, we widened our musical tastes. I have a cd I just bought last year that has Michael McDonald singing Xmas songs, & it's pretty good. I particularly like a series of Xmas cd's that are called "A very Special Xmas", by various artists who have contributed their talents to this album, which proceeds go to the Special Olympics effort. So far, I know there's 2 cd's; don't know if they've done a vol. 3 yet, or not. It's an interesting mix of artists, including Tom Petty, Randy Travis, Luther Vandross,Aretha Franklin, Bonnie raitt, Wilson Phillips & even a score done by Frank Sinatra & Cindy Lauper. I like mixing it up; another one I have was distributed by the US Postal Service, called Dear Santa, w/various artists, one being Alicia Keys singing "Little Drummer Girl". Will keep u informed if I discover any new ones this year. Haven't really goneout to look for any new music yet, but will likely be doing that this week. If u have not yet treated yourself to hearing some of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's works, you're missing out.

Oh yes, I have listened to Trans-Siberian. A Secret Santa of mine got me that several years ago. Keep me posted if you find something particularly interesting...

From what she told me, he wasn't answering his phone, it being Xmas eve and all. It was bad for the shoppers, but at least they could leave. Imagine being stuck at work and having to listen to that! Urgh!
Actually, my other gig is done. I did four reviews, three of which got published in Tsunami (I picked up a copy today). There's not another issue out until February, but have been busy with my real job and lots of other stuff. Still, I will try and make time to visit Muzikal Mafia as much as I can. I like it here.

My daughter had a list of CDs and band posters/merchandise on her Christmas list. I've learned that my daughter and I, for the most part, have extremely different tastes in music. Not wanting to be one of "those parents" who is out-dated and judgmental, I allow those differences without much investigating. I do have some rules about music, but I'm not huge on censorship, either. At any rate, when the Christmas list was distributed to family, the phone calls of concern started pouring in.
The band name: HIM. Their symbol, from what I understood, was a heart-o-gram, a combination of a pentacle with a heart. No problem so far... sounds like a "boy band" to me. However, once I started getting calls of concern that this was a satanic group, I looked up just enough to make me add this group to the censored list in our house.
HIM, I learned, stands for His Infernal Magesty, and while the band claims on their bio page not to want to be associated with satanic influence, their song titles, such as "Sweet 666" seem contradictory to that claim.
Have you heard of this band?

No I haven't. I will do some of my own investigating and let you know what I find. I think you are wise to strip that one from the okay banner.
