Muzikal Mafia's NEW LISTENING PARTY & CONTEST

October 21st 2006 04:05
LIke a Comfortable Pair of Shoes...What Artist Never Lets You Down?

What group or solo artist can be depended upon to do whatever it is they do....whether its to help you seduce that poor innocent girl, get over a broken heart, drink, think, cry, cheat, tantalize your man with moves worthy of a stripper pole, whatever it is. No matter what it is, tell us, all these voices in my head:

Why this artist does it for you? Do they still perform today? Have they ever released a CD that you hated? Tell us your all time favorite song by this artist or group...

Pay attention: Is there a new group or artist you are dying to introduce to the world? Well, leave a comment because...

The winning group or artist with the most comments will be a part of our new Listening party.

Once a month, the winning group or solo artist from a post such as this one will be chosen. We will then vote on best track. The names of everyone who voted for the winning track gets their name entered into a drawing. The winner gets to write a spotlight post on Muzikal Mafia on any artist or topic of their choice regarding music, with full credit and link to their blog from Muzikal Mafia.

(I reserve the right to editorial control over content, in regards to appropriateness. (I'm pretty liberal but there are some sick shits out there.) Winner will be notified by private message. All questions about this contest should be directed to me personally via private message on my homepage.)

I again will have to say Alice in Chains unplugged. It makes me smile and at times it makes me cry.
It is definitely my "go to" CD. I love every song, and each one has a meaning for me. "Somethings
got tp turn out right". The Fray "how to save a life" cd is also very equipped with some wonderful
song writing. I probably listen to that weekly. I am going to go out on a limb and hope I won't be
bashed for this comment but, Mr John Mellencamp is also one of my favorite songwriters. Scarcrow
and Lonsome Jubilee have very moving songwriting. The thing about John is that a lot of his songs
that I love are not the ones released on the radio. Okay so I am going to give you lyrics to one of my
favorites from John. It's called "The real life" and it's off Lonsome Jubilee

Suzanne divorced her husband
She got the keys to the car and the home
But her friends were really his friends
No one stops by to see her much anymore
So one night she goes back down to the old haunts
That once upon a time were her own
She didn't know nobody out there no more
And the whole experience just made her feel so old
She says

Chorus
I want to live the real life
I want ot live my life close to the bone
Just because I'm middle-aged that don't mean
I want to sit around my house and watch T.V.
I want the real life
I want to live the real life

Jackson Jackson was a good kid
He had four years of college and a bachelor's degree
Started workin' when he was 21
Got fed up and quit
When he was 43
He said, "My whole life
I've done what I'm supposed to do
Now I'd like to maybe do something for myself
And just as soon as I figure out what that is
You can bet your life I'm gonna give it hell"
He says

Chorus

I guess it don't matter how old you are
Or how old one lives to be
I guess it boils down to what we did with our lives
And how we deal with our own destinies
But something happens
When you reach a certain age
Particularly to those ones that are young at heart
It's a lonely proposition when you realize
That's there's less days in front of the horse
Than riding in the back of this cart
I say

Chorus

Anon, (Tink?)
I also love AIC Unplugged. It was a beautiful experience to watch. I remember the first time I watched it, Staley's teeth, his eyes, his pink hair (smile), the message written on the guitar...I am still just as impacted today by the beauty of the set illuminated by candles, the subtle, shy humor of Jerry, and the very subtle underlying suggestion of love that came across...

As for Mellencamp, although I could be wrong, I don't think anyone can honestly say, even if they do not care for his music, that he was not a brilliant lyricist. His timeless depictions of the American lives of blue collar workers was important and each song is as relative today to that experience as it was when he first wrote it. Do not fear rebuke from me on that one...great, great choice. My favorite lines from Jubilee are:
"I want to live the real life
I want ot live my life close to the bone
Just because I'm middle-aged that don't mean
I want to sit around my house and watch T.V.
I want the real life
I want to live the real life"

and

"My whole life
I've done what I'm supposed to do
Now I'd like to maybe do something for myself
And just as soon as I figure out what that is
You can bet your life I'm gonna give it hell"

Giving it hell in Indiana,

Hi Voices,

You look lovely today!

What a great question. I've had these songs going around in my head for days too, just this morning I thought, hey I must get my fav. Simon and Garfunkle CD again, I used to have a tape, I really enjoyed their songs.

Seriously though, you know my tastes are ecclectic and I have just about everything in my music cupboard - dependant on mood, but recently I've really gotten into this new chill music, perhaps because of my age, but perhaps we havejust recently moved from the country back into suburbia and I often feel cramped. We live in a tropical state in Australia too and you cannot jump about too much during the summer heat. I have discovered Vargo and really love their album [beauty]. Other than that 'Open Space' and 'Vibe,' are a couple good chill CDs too. I find they help me write and relax, especially Vargo.

Other than that I really like Celine Dion (New Day album) and Shakira's 'Laundry service,' Shakira's lyrics are really quirky. I like Norah Jones and I absolutely love Shaun Mullins, especially Soul's Core, and especially after a couple gin and tonics I really like some Tom Waites to and don't mind Santana ... here we go, I'm stating to remember them all now...

I'm sure I'll think of many more as this list grows and others are mentioned.

Lilla.

Lilla,
Isn't music the most amazing thing? I marvel at it all the time, much more so than love, it is our international language. I know exactly what you mean about a song or two just tapping you on the shoulder like a child wanting attention. And when you cave in and pull out the record, cd, tape, 8-track or what the hell ever, you are soooooooo glad you took a few moments to give it the attention it deserved.

I love so many, like you, that it is hard for me to choose. I need to get some Santana. I do not have any in my collection, although I have Justin Timberlake, due to a friend of my daughter's buying the cd for her and I had already bought it for her for Christmas. But still, INEXCUSABLE. (I love Sexyback, JT's newest single...It is commercial but sometimes you have to "shake it like a polaroid picture" and it's hard to keep the minivan on the road when I'm doing the Beyonce' *smile*)

Is Vargo an Australian group? I don't believe I have heard of them and I couldn't find anything of them online. If you have a link or something, send it to me, please. I would like to check them out.

Chakira is amazing, in the sense that she is very, very original. Her voice is a bit grating to me but I am mesmerized by those damn hips! I didn't even know it was possible to move like that!

I have several Celine Dion cds simply for the technical mastery of her voice, which is powerful.

Well, Lilla, how nice of you to stop by for a chat. DO come back soon, you know how much I love to visit with you.

PS Thanks about the picture...I appreciate it.

TOTO's Africa (with Dave on vocal), Stop Lovin' You (Joe Williams vocal), I Will remember, Without Your Love (Steve), Home Of The Brave (Dave and Bobby), Animal (Jean Michael Byron), Bottom Of Your Soul (Steve and Joe), Afraid Of Love (Steve).

Elton John's Sad Songs

Allman Bros.'s Melissa

And of course, USA for Africa's We Are The World. Call me any names you can think, but the sheer talent that was in the same room at the same time is unfathomable. And it makes my eyes water.

Shit, I could turn this into a thiesis!
Whaddya think? Ask me of any tunes you don't recognise.

LethalPiano,
Instead of asking about the any I don't recognize, let's start with ones that I also love.

Queen, Don't Stop Me Now...I have their greatest hits album with everything on it that has ever been heard, I think ( I kid...) And when I am at work and that song comes on, its all I can do not to stand on my desk and shout it out...lol I LOVE it.

Anything by Billy Joel is great...I have his greatest hits, volume one and two. Vol. two is my favorite and has all of the songs that came out when I was a teen, Uptown Girl, It's Still Rock n Roll to me, Pressure, Allentown, the list is endless. I love him and always will. His lyrics are brilliant and there are FAR too many for me to put down here. I am going to add some forums to this blog for things like that soon.

I think that We are the World was a BEAUTIFUL event. No ribbing from me. That all of those people got together and wanted to make a difference was great. What did we do as a collective public? Ridicule it and then sit around and bitch about bad off the world is...why should anyone bother? (I mean that rhetorically. lol)

I love your reference to Garth Brooks. I love that you are that much of a music snob that you recognize all genres have value, instead of dismissing country altogether. I love Garth Brooks...Aint Goin' Down (til the sun comes up), Friends in Low Places, When the Thunder Rolls and Full House are a few of my fave songs of his...

All great mentions...thanks and do come back!

Hello again Voices,

Thanks for the compliment.

I know what you feel about daughter's music, I have two of my own and they keep me well versed on the latest zoundz - some pretty good, even at my age ... We have little mini disco's on Friday nights.

Vargo is a German 'group.' (I think there's only two of them).

Anyway if you go to www.ambient-domain.com you have a straight out listen to Serenity one of the tracks of [beauty]. As I said, it's fast becoming my favourite 'write' music. Also Ab. Fab. for driving in heavy traffic.

I'd love to hear your comments on what you think of it after listening?

Lilla,
The link to that site is either not working or my computer is just taking too long to access it, right now. I will listen later, though, and let you know what I thought about it...Thanks for the linkage..

I honestly don't know much about Santana's work, other than that I should know more. :c) I am always trying to listen to things I wouldn't typically pick up, because 9/10 xs I like it.

As for writing music, I have determined that listening to Justin Timberlake, Blue October or Hinder doesn't make a condusive writing environment. I have since went with a nature cd, "Thunderstorms". It helps me access that dark place again after too much Byonce, ass shakin, Justin Timberlake music. :c)

Thanks for stopping by again, I appreciate it!

From waaaaay back when they were Split Enz, the Finn brothers,Tim & Neil have always written lyrics that have resonated deeply with me. When they became Crowded House, they were just magical.
Paul Kelly is another who writes in a way that affects, and I dont care what you think of me but I always like Diesel, (Mark Lizotte) I think he is quite under-rated.
Hoo-bloody-rah for the Spiegeltent - if youre in Melbourne and youre a fan of Paul Kelly, Joe Camileri, Diesel or a bunch of others, check out THIS LINK You beauty!

Ok...just a few words on the link...

Honey, I am from the USA and I had no idea where you were sending me but like a good girl, or fool, not sure which, I followed your link and it was wonderful that I actually read the history before making any judgements. But I gotta say, that had me worried for a sec. lol Beautiful though. Thanks for the linkage.

Now, as for the music, as far as I know, I haven't heard any of them. But I have a little research to do now, don't I? :c)

Thanks for the compliment...I assume you were talking to me when you said, 'Beauty'..oh no, now what if you werent? Now, I've gone and made this akward, haven't I? *smile*

yeah sorry I forget sometimes that not everyone here is Aussie
That travelling Speigeltent is amazing, I urge you all to look at that link, it is an awesome show that comes through every year for a couple of months and they just fill it with fantastic stuff - it seems to be most popular in Australia.

Voices - those artists are pretty much as distinctively Antipodean as you can get. The Finn Brothers are Kiwis, but they call Crowded House an Australian band, and their songwriting is my personal fav. A collective of female Aust artists has released an album of their songs, called "She will have her way" and it is just beautiful.
I do tend to refer to Australian music quite a bit, so I'm sorry if you have no clue what Im talking about.

Single Bloke,
Do not ever apologize for sharing something new at Muzikal Mafia, truly. It is wonderful to learn new things about different musical groups, even if they aren't native to our countries. Keep sharing with us!

Just since I have been on Orble, I have met a wonderful Aussie writer, I have learned to say, 'Spit the Dummy' and I now know what Steve Irwin, God rest his soul, was referring to when he said, "Flat out like a lizard drinking."

I am moving to Australia as soon as they export all the poisonous wildlife...

OK, here it is!

There was a jam session at the Fillmore which Bill Graham was presiding over with Chet Helms (the guy that gave Janis a lift to California, back in the day). Chet was the easy going promoter whereas Bill was the agressive type of promoter; he really wanted to make a home for all concerned, both for the rockers, the people and foremost the music.

Anyway, at this jam session there were a few tasty rockers playing, like Gerry Garcia, Michael Wilthie (or Wilfie, I'm not sure), Paul Kantner and Carlos Santana. So after Carlos's solo, Bill Graham came over and said "Yey man, that was pretty good! You gotta band?" And Carlos replied that he had, and then Bill asked him to come back and open for the Stones and The Who! Now, how's that for a right-place-right-time scene?

At the time they were all playing blues, but Carlos's take on the blues was Afro Cuban so all of a sudden everyone had something to dance to. There were no introductions, people just smashed the floor and that's where Carlos Santana, and a lot of them, started, with the help of Chet Helms and Bill Graham, in Califorr nee eye aye.

As I said before, I'm full of useless information like that...and what's more, I'm lucky enough to have a lot of it on tape.

Hey, another slant, you said you didn't know me from a bar of soap but I can tell you that's the way it's gonna stay. I am not going to even consider contemplating thinking about smashing into today's music. Stuff it, let sleeping dogs lie, I reckon. However, I know there are bootlegs of me out there somewhere...I've seen them.

You know you have me curious as all hell about you...just PM me and tell me who you are or I swear it will drive me bonkers. *wink*

As for being in the right place at the right time, well that's an understatement. You know, I can't even comment properly...I have no comparisons to that sort of experience, but I am thinking of making you my chosen god of worship...How would you feel about that?

You are telling me you were in the same room with all these rockers?? I can't even imagine what kind of spaz I would be in a situation like that. Tell me this, did you play with them? COME ON...tell me that much...that and what song? That, what song, and did you sleep with any of them? That, what song, did you sleep with any of them and who you are...that is ALL I am asking for. :c)

Well, what a pleasant way to end the day. Chosen subject of Muzikal worship, eh? I can handle that...!

I'm only gonna answer two of your questions... One, no I didn't sleep with any of them (I'm an ejjumacated STRAIGHT pianoman, very rare these days) and no I wasn't there. I have been in a room, however, jamming with Kieth, Jeff, Tom, Marc, Ginger and a guy called Christopher Robin. At the same time. Lionel shook my hand after my rendition of New York State. I've also played for Ron Wood (unknowingly) and was invited to play something somewhere for a certain royal family.

Satisfy your curiosity??? Oh yeah, and I was being sarcastic too. Please don't let my black sense of humour bother you! Oh, and don't even try to guess who I am coz it'll only drive you to an early grave! However, I am going to offer my tonnes of useless information to you to exploit at any time.

Lethalpiano,
Is that Ginger Baker? Really?? Really? Ooh, tell me all.

Sorry Voices, going back to the beginning to see what the post was about. I just got so carried away with the name Ginger ...

Okay, as far as an all encompassing artist that satisfies every moment, I'd have to say that would be the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They have everything in their musical arsenal that a girl like me could want.

So many faves of mine among their songs, but I'm currently listening to The Zephyr Song and so I'm going to choose this as my favourite:

Can I get your hand to write on
Just a piece of lead to bite on
What am I to fly my kite on
Do you want to flash your light on
Take a look its on display - for you
Coming down no not today

Did you meet your fortune teller
Get it off with no propeller
Do it up it's always stellar
What a way to finally smell her
Pick it up it's not to strong - for you
Take a piece and pass it on

Fly away on my Zephyr
I feel it more then ever
And in this perfect weather
We'll find a place together
Fly on my wing

Riddlin on liberator
Find a way to be a skater
Rev it up to levitator
Super mainly aviator
Take a look its on display - for you
Coming down no not today

Fly away on my Zephyr
I feel it more then ever
And in this perfect weather
We'll find a place together
In the water where the scent of my emotion
All the world will pass me by
Fly away on my Zephyr
We'll find a place together

Fly away on my Zephyr
I feel it more then ever
And in this perfect weather
We'll find a place together

In the water where the scent of my emotion
All the world will pass me by
Fly away on my Zephyr
We're gonna live forever
Forever

I love this song. They've never done a song I can't stand, although Under The Bridge is among my least favourite songs they've done. I know, I know, it's one of their most popular but it kind of leaves me cold and I can't really tell you why.

And Anthony Kiedis is a hot, hot man. Not as hot as Chris Cornell in his leather pants, but hot nonetheless. I saw them live a few years ago and they were awesome.
