Muzikal Mafia's Time Travel: The ONE Event You Would Experience?
October 26th 2006 23:38
I have a very simple question for you, my family. But more on that in a bit...I want you all to tell your worthy friends to come visit soon. We are seeing a lot of repeat visitors and we want that to continue, but we can't spread our international message against bad muzik without new blood...be fruitful and multiply...Invite one person to come check us out this week...but only if they are worthy. *smile*
Back to the question...
Is there one muzikal event you wish you could have attended or one that you want to experience before you die? An event that would make you think you had been as close to god on this earth as you can get? You may choose as many as you like...
I have four. One is obvious, overstated and irritating to some, but true nonetheless. I would have been at the MTV Unplugged performance of Alice in Chains in 1996, I believe it was. Not necessarily in the audience but behind the curtain, watching, worshipping. Perhaps I would have been the person who lit all those candles.
The other is that I would love to have been at the Ed Sullivan show when Elvis appeared. I would have loved to have been scandalized by the music, the sexuality, the hip movements, all of it. I find Elvis, as a young man, breathtakingly sexy.
I risk losing all cred here...but I have to be honest with you. I would go back in time, to the Conway Twitty concert and seduced the hell out of that man. He still has the power to melt me everytime I listen to him. I mean, in a deep, deep way. His voice, the way he sang, the confidence in his sexuality and ability to please a woman was incredible. It wasn't just him or just his voice, it was the whole package with him.
and finally, I would like to see a Billy Joel concert where he did a bit of everything...
There you have it. My muzikal wish list...tell me yours.

My kids make me listen to the Gorillas. They don't suck.
I've seen Alanis in concert twice - both powerful events in Wendiland, and I had the great honor of front row center for a Stevie Nicks concert wherein I had the drunken nerve to shout out, "You go girl!" when she came out in a pink feathered hat. That earned me the right to have her reach out and grab my hand. Fortunately, I didn't faint or wet myself!
I'm a musical dwarf. Sorry.
*LOL*

There are no muzikal dwarfs in the Mafia. There are only imbecils who like Britney Spears and the like. You mentioned two of my fave women in the biz...we don't all have to be able to recount Rolling Stone's top 500 must have albums. I think those who can and those that actually make it a point to go get those albums are seriously muzikally challenged.
Tell me, I am more an Alanis girl than a Stevie girl...what are your favorite all time lyrics by both women? Tell me why too...I am curious. My favorite ones by Alanis are "You Outta know"...May I remind you of the mess you left when you went away?? Its not right its not fair to remind me of the cross I bare that you gave to me.." something along those lines. I love that song. When I really need to get some anger out, that's what I grab. I do have to say that when she started thanking India, I got a little peeved. lol

My thing with Alanis is that she seems to be on my same evolutionary track. Of course, "You oughta know" was the attraction. My daughter's father left me 8 months pregnant with our daughter so he could re-marry his ex-wife. Yeah, I needed music that would allow me to be justifiably pissed. It worked.
"All I Really Want" used to play on my answering machine. At that time, I was in my mid-twenties and earning a buck slinging beer in Vegas bars. Oddly enough, the shorter my shorts got, the more money I made and I felt for certain I was selling myself short. I wanted to be recognized for my intillectual ability, not for my nice ass. *excuse the french*.
"And all I really want is some patience... a way to calm the angy vibes. And all I really want is deliverance.... [scream]." Of course, we can't forget the kindered spirit plea.
Even the peace of mind coming out in "Thank You" was timely, because it came as I was merging (or is that yielding) into my thirties and was ready to stop being mad at the world and hurtful to myself.
Uninvited is my all time favorite... not so much because the words hit home as they do in her other songs, but because I can belt the hell out of that song at Karaeoke (yes, I know I probably misspelled that word, but I've transferred from desk to couch and am entirely too lazy to look it up) and it provokes a great reaction from the crowds, which is great stroking for my Leo ego. *LOL*
Not all of her stuff rings bells with me, though. Some of her stuff is just a wee bit too chaotic. I'm not a big fan of chaotic noise. Oh, but another one that does give me goose bumps and make me cry is "That I would be good". Ain't that the truth, honey! *smirk*
Not the Doctor, another karaoke fav of mine, helped me end a devastating two year relationship.
As for Stevie, I appreciate her more recent works more than the Fleetwood Mac era.
"I'm tired. I'm thirst-hay-hay-hay. I'm wild-eyed... in my misery-ey-yeah-yeah. Sourcerer, who is the master... a man and woman on a star stream, in the middle of a snow dream. Sourcerer, show me the high life."
I'm even willing to admit I had NO IDEA she was singing about cocaine until she said so in concert. I'm a dork, I admit it. *snort*

Gosh, that's so hard! Honestly, I think I'd have to say my dad, but don't tell my mom that. *LOL*
I clap and giggle whenever I hear Fats Domino.
I love the Judds, but shh, don't tell. *LOL* Had a dream once that Naomi asked me to stand in for Wynonna. What a trip!
My sister and I, way back in the 80's, used to fight over who loved Corey Hart more. She won. (I wear my sunglasses at night so I can so I can....)
I like Aerosmith, BonJovi, Jewel (even though her personality sucks), Sheryl Crow, Natalie Merchant...
It's hard to say a favorite when they each bring something unique to the table.
Then again, people used to call my car the Alanis-mobile, so I wonder if I should just "go there" with my answer.
Comment by Wendi
And there's an artist I saw once live... Willy Porter. He opened for the Jeff Beck concert and I fell madly in love with his mind and talent, so he might have to win my favorite of all time. He sang a song called "The trees have souls" and I tell you I felt my soul come out of myself and give me a hug. That's good stuff! I bought one of his CDs, but it didn't have that song on it and I was bummed. I never did try to buy another, though.
Also like Blondie.
My CD collection is extremely limited and I don't often seek out music. I listen to music on road trips, but I've given the kids "dibbs" on the radio dials in my Jeep. When I'm writing, I can't stand lyrics, so I most often work in silence. The only time I really seek out music is when I've got an uncontrollable emotional wave I need to release, which is most often done by blasting alanis in my garage. *LOL*

Just in case you couldnt find the song..I found the lyrics for you...
You've Never Been This Far Before
Conway Twitty
i can almost hear the stillness
as it yields to the sound of your heart beating
and i can almost hear the echo
of the thoughts that i know you must be thinking
and i can feel your body tremble
as you wonder what this moment holds in store
and as i put my arms around you
i can tell you've never been this far before
i don't know what i'm saying
as my trembling fingers touch forbidden places
i only know that i have waited
for so long for the chance that we are taking
i don't know and i don't care
what made you tell him you don't love him anymore
and as i taste your tender kisses
i can tell you've never been this far before
and as i take the love you're giveing
a can feel the tension building in your mind
and you're wondering if tomorrow
i'll still love you like i'm loving you tonight
you have no way of knowing
but tonight will only make me love you more
and i hope that you'll believe me
'cause i know you've never been this far before

He actually sounds a bit like my father, and I have to stand corrected... I do believe I've heard "Hello, Darlin" - and it was my father singing it!
Interesting the education you're giving me. I wonder how I'll ever repay a favor of this calibur.
May Karma smile kindly on you.
Tell me, did he write his own songs for the most part?
Comment by The Voices in my Head
The Voices in my Head
Yes, I believe he did, but let me research that for you. I am almost certain that he did write most of his own because the voice is so true to his genteel spirit. He sings about making love, not sex. He is always incredibly sensitive to the woman's feelings of the giving of her body, he was just an amazingly sexy man. Through and through. I will get back to you on the lyrics and you get back to me after this song...lol
As for returning a favor, honey, just appreciate Conway and pay it forward...turn some friend of yours on to him that may need a little romance. Guys have gotten off-literally- too damn easy! This is what we want. Let's start a movement.

Okay, wait...
There's a story behind "The Rose" that's really quite comical in retrospect. Travel with me in time back to about fourth grade. Music class... we learned "The Rose", but of course, I had no idea who sang it. I LOVED that song more than you could even understand! The other kids in music class were not as passionately appreciative and took advantage of the teacher's passive nature. One day in class while we were supposed to be practicing this song, all the boys in the row behind me were being complete jerks and the teacher had to keep starting us over. I got so mad... so mad (and don't worry, the anger streak has faded) that I kicked my chair out from under me, screamed at the top of my voice, "You're all a$$ holes!" and stormed out of the class, slamming the door behind me. I thought I'd get in so much trouble, but apparently the teacher was touched by my attentiveness in his class and allowed me to come in on my own time after school to learn the song.
To this day, I NEVER knew who sang it!
First Willy... now the rose.... heck, I might have to marry you! *LOL*

Now, I want to see if you noticed something with You've never been this far before.
Did you notice that the song starts off slow...foreplay, then builds in speed and tempo (passionate lovemaking) reaches a peak in tempo (climax) and then recedes like afterglow back to a slow tempo?

However I will.
Voices, I love love LOVE Janis Joplin. I would go back in time to anything where she was singing live. Perhaps back to 1963-64 in pubs and jazz bars in Austin Texas with the Dick Oxtot Jazz Band, before anybody had heard of the prodigious talent that was Janis Joplin and before stardonm led her down the path that eventually killed her. You mentioned you'd be buying her this weekend - what did you get?
And I can't leave without saying that at the very least for letting me eavesdrop, I will endeavour to listen to some Conway Twitty before I die.

As for having a go, is there anything more needed to convince you than to say that if you got some Conway, and if you listened to Conway on a date with some poor girl you were trying to seduce...that it would more than likely be her seducing you by night's end? (ha)
Actually, Lethal, you are familiar with Loretta Lynn's work, so chances are very good that you have listening to Conway a time or two, they were always doing duets together, 'Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man', 'As Soon as I Hang Up The Phone' and 'Lead Me On', just to name a few.
Besides, You know everyone else's work...why not have a go at his music? *smile*

I recommend everything she's ever done! To ease yourself in to Janis, perhaps a Greatest Hits.
Or Farewell Song. Perhaps some "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again, Mama". These two are my two favourites. Or Pearl - an all time classic and probably one of her most well known. This has Mercedes Benz among other classics on it.
Kozmic Blues does, however, have Work Me Lord, which I told you about in another post. This is my all time, favourite Janis Joplin song. Ever. And Farewell Song has Farewell Song, which I also mentioned in the same post. Let's just say, you can't go wrong with Janis.

OHHHHHHHH I am a happy happy girl.
I love Rooster. I love No Excuses, I love it all. Staley's work is intensley inspiring to me. I am not sure if you watched the MTV UNplugged...but oh, imagine the dark set, the candles burning everywhere, Jerry is sitting there picking at his guitar...and here comes Layne. Beautiful, too thin, strung out, but powerful Staley. Teeth half eaten away from heroin, pink short hair because I have a feeling someone played a horrible trick on him, a guitar held by one of the bandmembers that read, "Friends don't let friends get bad haircuts."
It was the first performance in three years because Staley was so bad off from his addiction, and I sort of imagine that maybe someone had to go pick Staley up, get him in the shower, clean him themselves, they rushed him over to the hair stylist, who panicked at the tangled mess of hair and just cut it all and colored it...pink (as instructed maybe by Jerry out of revenge for having to do all that for Layne, again but done anyways because Jerry loved Layne...but it didn't stop his wicked sense of humor)
Yes, I love them a lot.
Thanks for sharing that with me...

I'm not too picky about which concerts I could get to, but I would have loved to have seen Pink Floyd and The Doors live.
I spent four years in England desperately hoping Pink Floyd would reform and I could see the show. Obviously The Doors needs Jim Morrison so that will never happen.

The reason we don't want to discuss music much is because we would prefer to make it ... (Okay, so it would hardly be the type of music that was pressed to vinyl or compacted to disc [unless of course some porn director wanted to use it as the soundtrack to his latest film) ...
I'm surprised that you don't like Springsteen, but my guess is: that is probably because of your age ... You were probably first introduced to his later 'stuff'. His later 'stuff' I don't even listen to ... or like ... Born in the USA is mid-life-crisis male-menopausal music ... I listen to Born to Run, Nebraska and the title track from The River ... the rest I'm not even interested in ...
