Prince: Genius or Offensive?
November 7th 2006 00:37
My artist of choice, when it comes to out and out sexual heat is none other than Prince.
This man can say the most bizarre or actually quite rude things and it's just incredibly sexy. Some of my favorite lyrics from Prince include:
"Now move that big ass 'round this way so I can work on that zipper, baby." Sexy M.F.
In print, it doesn't look like much...but trust me...he has the deepest voice and it just works its way all the way down my spine...
"You're filthy cute and baby, you know it..." Cream
Who says that?? And why don't they?? That's great! I would love to be told that but then...maybe it's just a Prince thing.
"I met her in the hotel lobby..." Darling Nikki
'Nuff said.
There are some artists out there who are absolutely grounded in sex. That doesn't make them less of an artist in my book. Again, you know how I feel about being made to feel something...if an artist can make me feel it...then more power to them.
There is a lot of Prince music that I do not like and what I do like is most of his older music. But when it comes to admiration, this man has mine. He has his hand in so much music, that you would be astonished, if you are not a Prince fan. If you are, then you know...don't ya?
Here is your chance...try to convince the nonbelievers why they should love Prince...everyone who hates him...tell us why? What song most offends you by Prince? Got a little known fact? Leave it here. Let loose...say whatever you want...Like him or hate him, tell us why. Favorite songs, favorite lyrics, leave it all.

Why do I love him? He was the first artist apart from classical music that I discovered all on my lonesome and loved all by myself. Like you, Voices, I have an older brother who used to dictate my musical decisions to me and he absolutely loathes Prince with a passion. But when I first heard When Doves Cry, I almost died with the ecstasy of it all. I was about 13 and so just coming into that period when I was discovering sex. And Voices, you said it, the man screams sex.
I love his voice, I love his funkiness, I love his dirty lyrics. I love him.
There's this Aussie band called Regurgitator who have done a song in the style of Prince called "The Song Formerly Known As". The lyrics are nothing like a Prince song, but they've got the funkiness all wrapped up in a neat little basket

with his music on this issue. When I was in Jr. High; Purple Rain was released, and WOW!!!! I just loved
When Doves Cry. I liked his later releases too, and can now say I just flat out love him. I have seen
him in concert just 2 years ago right after he was inducted into the Rock -n- Roll Hall of Fame. When
I was watching him perform I realized that this man was a musician by every account of the word.
So for all the haters....it would be hard to put this man down. He plays all the instruments in almost
all of his songs. I didn't realize how he could make a guitar scream until I seen him live. He would ask
us (the audience), "Do you mind if I just play this for a few minutes?" and he would just whale on that
guitar. When I was younger I didn't care that he could do all that; I just worried about those naughty
songs by Prince that I loved. For those that didn't know, He wrote "Nothin Compares" which Sinead
O' Conner did, and hit big with it. Sign O Times is one of my favorites. He is a genius.

By all means, treat yourself and buy his greatest hits...it will have everything on there that you love, probably.
When Doves Cry is a universal, it seems like. I loved that song and I wanted to hear it all the time but Prince was strictly forbidden in my house. My mother was unfortunately in the tv room when one of his perfomances included the assless pants...and again when he ripped off his shirt. My mother hates him to this day.
His sexuality is not in his looks, although he has a pretty mouth...its in his attitude and lyrics. He is a brilliant musician, too. Incredibly talented all the way around. But I know that many people despise him. I am curious as to why. Thus, this post..
Thanks for commenting...

Help me out, I know you know his music. Am I wrong about the filthy cute lyrics? Is that in Peach, instead? I just realized I think I got the song wrong.
Ditto on everything you said, except for seeing him in concert...I haven't done that. Probably won't. He is one of those artists I don't really want to share with a whole lot of people. I might get kicked out if I gave everyone a lapdance...

And I thought we were soul mates! lol We aren't talking about his looks...we are talking about if he is talented or not? Offensive or not? Aside from his looks, do you like any of his music or hate one of his songs with a passion? I love most of his popular stuff but I hated 'Sign o' the Times'. Yukka.

Ohhhh I see what you meant, vocals were too feminine. I am nearing exhaustion so perhaps you could draw pictures with your comments so I can follow along...I am not too sharp tonight!
I agree that the symbol thing was over the top...and so was writing 'Slave' on his cheek...I don't like it when he screeches but I don't mind his voice being high...he can pull it off.
But if you are ever in the market for some explicitly naughty music, give the songs above a try. When he sings in a deeper range, his voice is amazing.
Just don't let the kids listen!

I wasn't aware of the Slave thing on his face. Interesting. I admire his flare, I've got to give him that. However, he borders Michael Jackson weird in my book.
I'm sure there must be one or two songs he's done that I'd like. It's not just a high voice that bothers me - there have been male high voices I like (Beegees, for example) - but his comes with an inexplicable shrill that grates on me. :
No worries, though. You had me at twitty.
I've also surprised myself, though, by becoming a fan of Eminem - there are some I don't care for, but in general, I can't help but admire his skill with lyrics and charisma.

Eminem is one of those annoying performers who has a way of making you all out hate him in the beginning, and then sloooooowly charm you into not vomiting anymore when you hear him. On 'Encore', I was so angry by like the second track that I wanted to throw the cd out the window. But I have this thing about listening all the way through...so I did. I will be damned...but he does this bit about Michael Jackson that just cracked me up...all his skits on that cd cracked me up...pretty soon I was going down the highway just screaming, "Just LOSE IT...ahahahahahah...Just lose it...."
I said all that to say this: Yeah, I know. lol

Prince was great in the 80's and early 90's but once he found god his music dried up and quite frankly he now offends me with his do goodery.

Hmmmm. The analytical side of me thinks there is more to your being offended by God than Prince. That's ok though...not everyone can separate the two. And by the way, he does not consider himself to be religious or Christian-in the broad sense of the word and religion- he considers himself to be spiritual. This world could use a lot more do goodery in my humble opinion. To each his own, though!

For me his creative zenith was around Sign O' the Times/The Black Album (1987) ... After that his albums started to have more and more throwaway tunes on it ...
His second album (1979) through to 1987 is superlative pop-funk.
His best three albums are Purple Rain, 1999 and Sign O' the Times .... er ... and Parade and Dirty Mind ...
I'm lucky to own numerous brilliant unreleased recordings (Rebirth of the Flesh, Old Friends 4 Sale, All My Dreams, 11-minute rockier mix of Computer Blue, original slow funk version of We Can Funk, Databank, G-Spot) which I collected years and years ago during a heated period of hunting and collecting around the time of The Black Album being un-released.
My all-time fave track of his is Joy In Repetition which I first got hold of many years before it surfaced on his Graffiti Bridge album in a lesser mix) ...
He like to frequent this club down up on 36th
Pimps and thangs like 2 hang outside and cuss for kicks
Talking 2 no one in particular, they say "The baddest I am tonight"
4-letter words are seldom heard with such dignity and bite.
All the poets and the part-time singers always hang inside
Live music from a band plays a song called "Soul Psychodelicide".
The song's a year long and had been playing 4 months when he walked into the place
No one seemed to care, an introverted this-is-it look on most of their faces.
Up on the mic repeating 2 words, over and over again
Was this woman he had never noticed before he lost himself in the articulated manner in which she said them
These 2 words, a little bit behind the beat.
I mean just enough 2 turn u on
4 everytime she said the words another one of his doubts were gone
Should he try 2 rap with her? Should he stand and stare?
No one else was watching her, she didn't seem 2 care
So over and over, she said the words til he could take no more, (no more)
He dragged her from the stage and together they ran through the back door
In the alley over by the curb he said tell me what's your name
She only said the words again and it started to rain (rain, rain, rain)
2 words falling between the drops and the moans of his condition
Holding someone is truly believing there's joy in repetition.
There's joy in repetition.
Nuff said.

God doesnt offend me, what people do in the name of god does.
When I say Prince offends me now its because his music has become dull, unchallenging and has very much lost its sexual charisma.
By the way Prince is a Jehovah's Witness and quite frequently tries to push his new ideals on those around him. (Including a friend of mine who met him last year)
Oh and there is a brilliant Prince anecdote on An Evening With kevin Smith where he tells an hilarious tale about his experiences making a movie for the Purple one.

I did not know about the Jehovah's Witness development. I just remember how passionately he spoke on spirituality vs religion at one time...I learn something new everyday from the comments on here! Thanks for that information!
...and I agree with you wholeheartedly on the "in the name of God and/or religion" matter. I think, in general, Hollyweird tends to pursue bizarre religions or foreign ideas so that they do not have to change their life in any way other than to become much more focused on themselves.
I also agree that Prince's brilliance really lies in his eroticism. He is very sensual, or was, and it is a shame to lose that. We are so bombarded by the mechanics of sex in everything we see and hear anymore. We could use a bit more of the emotions and feelings of it. Prince was a master at that.
Thanks again for clarifying and educating...

Picasso or some other art guy once said that good taste is the enemy of art. I couldn't agree more, and I think censoring of the naughtier side of life is just dishonest and irresponsible. Of course, Prince pursues it to a point where every album is almost a concept album about S-E-X, but its brought some great music to the world. Yes, I love Prince.
As for trivia, I heard he sleeps with his guitar, just like Coltrane used to sleep with his sax. That's cool.
Oh, and a funny story. When I was younger I was watching video clips at a relative's house when my mum said "I don't like Prince, he's rude." My six year old cousin then replied "Why, does he butt in while other people are talking?"

Again, Couldn't agree with you more. I don't much care for his shrieking but I love his naturally deep voice...Sexy as hell. Not to mention, the man has given start to so many artists today. He has written for a number of them, as well. Just an amazing artist in my mind but I can definitely see why some are offended by him...

I like that story about my cousin, too. Out of the mouths of babes. And the bit about the naughtier side of life being uncensored is just part of my whole honesty and free speech schtick, but that's a whole other story.

One of my favourite moments is towards the end of "Kiss" when he just goes apeshit with the "ain't no particular sign, I'm more compatible with..." It's pretty hot. Even makes me wet

I did not know that about you...about the shrieking and the wetness. Wow. Are you sure it's not just evil ooze or hair grease gone awry?
My favorite Prince moment...that could be a whole other post. The stripper in me, her name is Muffy btw, comes out when I hear a Prince song. It's just uncontrollable. Especially to 'Peach'...it's really bad during 'Peach'. But I digress...what were we talking about???

Sorry I've been absent of late. I just remembered something that you may be interested in.
We have this show in Oz called Rage which is a music video program except without all the ads and crap. On a Saturday night, they let a guest programmer pick their favourite videos for something like four hours straight. It's a good way to see what bands your favourite artists are into and what music inspires them. The show used to scare the crap out of me when I was a kid with all the weird videos they would play, but I think it also fascinated me and is partly responsible for me getting into a lot of the music I like now.
Anyway, I remember staying up one night to watch it when I was about fourteen and who should be picking videos but your favourite, Layne Staley. I remember him picking heaps of cool stuff including lots of Ministry and Primus videos, Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box", "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine, and lots of David Bowie.
But the reason I am posting this here is because I have a distinct memory of Layne picking lots of Prince videos. That's right, Layne was a big Prince fan. It may not mean much, but it's a fond memory I have of the guy, and I remember being surpirsed that such a gloomy dude could be into someone like Prince (this was before I got into His Purpleness).
I wish I could get a copy of the show to remind me of what else he picked.

That is like a gift wrapped in a beautiful box, that little tidbit of information. NO I did not know that...thank you for sharing it with me.
Tinkster just got 'Mad Season' and TOTD, Mud Honey and a couple others. I can't wait to hear it. (We are offline friends, too) I heard the first song on MS or at least a part of it and it made me cry almost! I just miss his work.
It's nice to think that Layne wasn't so down and out at times that he couldn't have a little fun. Can you picture him singing, 'Kiss'? lol
