Shirley Temple's what???

January 10th 2007 03:20
Shirley Temples' P...y was the name of the band that we know as "The Stone Temple Pilots". I was told this years ago when they first came out, but I believe its true. I decided to make them my artist of the week. They changed their name a couple of times before coming up with the "Stone Temple Pilots". They stayed with the "STP" because they liked the "STP motor oil" logo.

I put them in my CD player last night and it's still in there. I have Core and Thank You which is their greatest hits. I suggest their greatest hits to everyone. 'Plush' is a great song, the original or acoustic version. There is also the Tinkster version which isn't bad. I was in Florida with my sister and we decided to go out one night. We went to a bar on the beach, and a two man band started playing "Plush". I immediately was on the floor jammin. The next thing I know they motioned me to come on stage with them, and I sang the song while they played. It was very cool. I want to give you the lyrics to a different song though. I like the seduction of this song and I wanted to share it with you.

'Sex Type Thing'
"I am, I am, I am
I said I wanna get next to you
I said I gonna get close to you
You wouldn't want me have to hurt you too? Hurt you too?
I ain't, I ain't, I ain't
A buyin' into your apathy
I'm gonna learn ya my philosophy
You wanna know about atrocity, atrocity?
I know you want what's on my mind
I know you like what's on my mind
I know it eats you up inside
I know, you know, you know, you know
I am a man, a man
I'll give you something that you won't forget
I said ya shouldn't have worn that dress

I said ya shouldn't have worn that dress
I know you want what's on my mind
I know you like what's on my mind
I know it eats you up inside
I know, you know, you know, you know
Here I come, I come, I come
I am, I am, I am
I said I wanna get next to you
I said I wanna get close to you
You wouldn't want me have to hurt you too? Hurt you too?
I know you want what's on my mind
I know you like what's on my mind
I know it eats you up inside
I know, you know, you know, you know
Here I come, I come, I come"

I was lucky to see the "Stone Temple Pilots" before they broke up. I saw them and others at the Hard Rock Festival in Chicago,Il. They played 4 songs. They played 'Plush', 'Sex Type Thing', 'Vasoline', and 'Interstate Love Song' . I was delighted.

Scott had trouble with heroin like many other artist, and it eventually caused the band to break up. He is now with "Velvet Revolver" and I hear that he has cleaned up his act. Good for you Scott! I have not gave "Velvet Revolver" a listen and I am not sure why.

Okay people let me know some of your favorite "STP" songs or lyrics. If you like them or hate them? Do you like the new band that Scott is in? Am I stupid for not buying a "Velvet Revover" CD? Come and talk to me

Voices, thank you. Yes "Sex Type Thing" is a very sexy song. My favorite lines are " I know you want what on my mind, I know you like whats on my mind. I know it eats you up inside. I know, you know." That is the part that got me the first time hearing it.

Hey Tinkster (and Voices, good to see you here too).

I used to love Shirley Temple's P...y when I was a teenager, but grew out of it...

Damn, that didn't come out right. If only there was a way of deleting things you have typed. Oh well, let me try again.

I actually like their album Tiny Music better than the earlier ones, where they went a bit more glam and pop. I think it suited them better than the broodiness of Core.

P.S. They should have never changed their name. What the hell is a Stone Temple Pilot anyway?

Hey Hellvis, nice comment on like STP when you were younger. So nice to see you stopping by. I liked Tiny Music also, I just didn't buy the CD. "Trippin on a hole in a paper heart" and "Big Bang Baby" were my favorite. But of course I haven't heard the whole album. The label wouldn't go for Shirley Temple's P...y, but I think Shirley Temple's Panties might of worked. What do you think?

By the way Hellvis, you might want to re-read the post because I modified it. I don't know if you got to see the part of me getting to perform "Plush" live with a band when I was in Florida.

Hey Tinkster,
Three words...

INTERSTATE LOVE SONG...

"Waiting on a sunday afternoon
For what I read between the lines,
Your lies.
Feelin like a hand in rusted shame
So do you laugh or does it cry?
Reply?"

Everytime I hear these lyrics...it reminds me of something...but I can't quite remember what. Hmmmm.

HEY HELLVIS,
Good to see you, too! I cracked up when I seen your comment to Tinkster. I had just emailed her and said that I was glad they changed the name...too...many...visuals.

Any sign of the Colonel lately?

Hey Tinkster,

That's cool that you got to perform the song. That would've been fun. In 2005 on Australian Idol, one of the contestants, an annoying mall punk kid called Lee Harding, sang "Plush". It wasn't too good. Another guy also did "Rooster" by Alice In Chains which was actually pretty good. There were some interesting song choices that year.

Shirley Temple's Panties would have been an okay name, but I like the flatout offensiveness of the other one.

That reminds me of a bit of useless music triva: Shirley Temple's daughter Lori (or Lorax) used to play bass with the Melvins.

Howdy Voices,

No word from the Colonel lately, although I did visit another Colonel yesterday and ate one of his Zinger Bacon & Cheese burgers. It wasn't quite the same as you and yourcheeseburgers, but it was close.

Did you know that "Sex Type Thing" is a song sung from a rapist's perspective? I remember reading that somewhere, although looking at the lyrics, it could be interpreted in a few different ways.

Hey Hellvis,
Lovely...first, the little tidbit about STP name and then a lovely little tune about rape. What am I going to find out next? That the band spent some time in prison for murdering someone's grandma? That they worship Satan? Give me your best shot at this point.

You should know that nothing will ever be as good as my cheeseburgers! In fact, you should make it your religion of choice. Oh wait....I have confused myself on food and religious denominations, again. Dammit.

Yes it was very cool I was able to sing it. The setting was great because it was like a hut on the beach of St Petersburg, Florida. I can do a pretty good Layne on "Nutshell" and "Rooster"

Voices, "Interstate Love Song" is a great title becaue it is one of those songs you love to hear while your driving. The lyrics to that song remind me of something too. Hey don't let Hellvis info on "Sex Type Thing" ruin you on that song. I know you love it, and I want you to still love it. Okay? Promise me.....

I wouldn't let the subject matter of "Sex Type Thing" ruin it for you. Let it be known that Weiland and a lot of the alternative bands of the time where very concerned about issues such as rape, playing benefit shows, etc. There was quite a shift in the '90s after the sexist hedonism of bands like GnR & Motley Crue.

Gotta admit, the old classic - was it called 'Yesterday'? - has stayed in my head after all these years.
