T.I may be the King, Lil' Wayne may be the Best, but Slim Thug is the BOSS. Four years after his debut album Already Platinum, the Boss is back with his latest Boss Of All Bosses. Since I really enjoyed the beats in Already Platinum, I had high hopes that his comeback would be as great as his first attack at the rap game.
The album begins with the title-track, Boss Of All Bosses, delivering the kind of start that just screams “I'm back!” Slim Thug simply destroys the beat with his sick flow. This song brings me back to that Slim Thugga flow. The chorus is an easy one-line hook as he repeats, “I'm the boss of all bosses.”Some people say he takes subliminal shots at Rick Ross, who knows...
Following the same theme is I'm Back featuring Devin Da Dude. I heard two versions of this song and I personally prefer the one with the piano. The beat fits very well with Slim's voice and Devin adds a little je ne sais quoi to the track. It's sweet and thug at the same time. Love it.
I Run, featuring YelaWolf, has a nice beat but it doesn't fit with Slim Thug. The chorus wasn't great but it was still well done. I think this one was supposed to be a slow club jam but that's not Slim Thug to me. I didn't hate it, but it's not going on my MP3 player if you know what I mean.
I Run Music Video
Show Me Love, featuring Mannie Fresh, has kind of the same problem as Run. It was supposed to be like a happy club banger but it came out sounding fake, as if they didn't work hard on it. The beat was simply too jumpy, it didn't go with the Boss.
Smile made me laugh when it started, but it as cool afterwards. The song feels a little bit like a Jeezy track with the “aye” in the background. Like Run, it was a slow club track. Cool song.
Top Drop, featuring Paul Wall, has that characteristic sound from the Dirty South with a big voice in the chorus. The track is good but boring, nothing like “Like A Boss.” This was like a smooth Southern song – nice to listen to when you've got nothing to do, but not a banger or a lyrics-centric song.
Thug uses the Eazy-E sample “he was once a thug from around the way” and goes back to the Slim Thugga feel. This is exactly what I like, those types of song. Slim Thug just kills it. He doesn't say anything important but his flow is just hella sick, so is his voice. No other rapper has voice like his; that's what makes him different.
Leanin' features UGK and is an average track. Except for the crazy hi-hat, everything else was just... normal. Not one for my MP3 player.
My B**** is, like the title says, a song about Slim's b****. It's a slow track, not too crazy, it felt a bit like Tupac.
Associates features Z-Ro and J-Dawg. It has a psycho-like beat which is pretty cool. They did a good job on this one. There's nothing to complain about.
J-Dawg also features on Hard alongside Scarface. The song is pretty cool, it has a smooth beat and the rappers did their thing.
She Like That, featuring Killa Kyleon, is the first “girl” song of the album. A slow song, everything seemed to be done in slow-motion. If it was a little faster, it would've been better in my opinion. The Auto-Tune also annoyed me. C'mon people, we're turning into robots.
The Southern reunion Welcome To Houston concludes the album. The track features a thirteen MCs from the South including Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, UGK, and Z-Ro. Although the idea was nice, the beat became really annoying as soon as Slim Thugh did his part. I couldn't even hear 'til the end, it was that annoying.
I give this album a 6,5 - 7 out of 10. I really like Slim Thug, I do, but he didn't bring it like he did on Already Platinum on songs like “3 Kings,” “Like A Boss,” “I Ain't Heard Of That,” “Click Clack,” and “This Is My Life.” I realized that the one thing missing from Boss Of All Bosses is some NEPTUNES production. The beats on BOAB are decent, but the songs that I just named simply kill them all. I still bump these old tracks, and they still go hard. Only Boss Of All Bosses brought me back to that Thugga sound on this record.
