The Power of the Media: Britney's Comeback
November 30th 2006 03:36
I have kept my mouth shut about the breakup and Britney's 'new old look'. I have kept my mouth shut about K-Fed and all the unfortunate child abuse-ish events. I have shut up about hair extensions and black roots, and white trashiness. Mainly, because if I say something about Br*tney S*ears, google jumps all over it and plasters her shit all over my site, which I cannot stand. I don't want to give her any type of notice all on this site.
However, enough is enough. This girl has been absolutely crucified in the press for the last two years. She gained weight, lost it, gained weight...wait...no...oh that's right, she was too dumb to read the instructions on the spermicide and used it in her mouth instead. I digress...
My point is that she has been blasted, she fell from grace, she has been the butt of more jokes than well...a dumb blonde...guess she was a twofer, huh?
This is what pisses me off.
We all know these things. We know she is a liar, a horrible singer, a dumbass, and obviously suffers from massive self-esteem issues from posts like this one...(ha)
So, what happens?
The media. That's what happens. We loved her at first because the media did...she was plastered all over the place, so we loved her after some not so subtle brainwashing of radio and magazines...as a result, her sales went through the roof...and Britney was a massive hit.
She grows up, (physically, I'm saying, and no, I am not referring to THOSE), she gets married and really lets her true self shine. The media hated her for it. They lost sales, their darling was suddenly trashy. Well, not suddenly...but you know what I mean and the trashiness had a name...K-Fed.
So, gone went the looks, out came the babies, and Britney was dangerously close to being a Jerry Springer Special.
We hated her. All was right with the world. We labeled her a nontalent. Yes. The public had taste again. NOW look what's happened!
She files for divorce, lost a bit of weight and all of a sudden, in a two week span, mass media is starving to get 'it' back...the Britney they made sooooo much money off of. So, out comes the mass media plan to get Britney back in our good graces.
She cuts her hair and wears sexy clothes again. She is blonde again. She is tanned again. She has been out every night with who else? Paris. Suddenly, there are magazine articles talking about how intelligent she is, what a business sense that she had that prenup. Like she even read it! She signed on the damn line with what I am guessing was an X or close to it.
Come on, people. She sucks. She will always suck. But it isn't even that she is getting some positive press that really irritates me. It's that people fall for it without question. Does it not strike you odd that two weeks ago, you laughed at that joke someone told about her and today you are admiring her haircut? You are nodding affirmatively that she is going to make a comeback?
Here is the last thing I am going to say -(almost)...question everything...accept nothing that doesn't make sense. Britney's miracle two week comeback, doesn't make sense.
This sort of thing drives me absolutely crazy. (Can you tell, because I am going for subtle here.)
There are so many brilliant artists out there who can't get the time of day but Britney can. WHY? There is no talent there, folks. NONE. She has a brilliant publicist. There is the talent. Britney doesn't even know what key she sings in. She doesn't. My hand to God, I heard her say that in an interview.
Okay, people. Here is your chance. This time and this time ONLY, if you have something to say about Spears, say it. If it's good, I will have to deal with it. I just need to know...WHY? Why do we -(you)-like her? Why is she making a comeback? Is she talented? Is she an artist. (ok I am going to be honest here...if anyone says she is an artist, I will delete your comment. Well, no I won't but I will cry a little.)

We hated her because she made stupid choices, bad mistakes, and created painful and expensive consequences. We also hated her because it's easier to point out the faults in others than it is to recognize the faults within ourselves. I'm sure we also hated her because our men all thought she was pretty to look at, and because she got rich making bubble gum bull shit beep bop music - so we were jealous because we work our fingers to the frigging bone for minimum wage and not an inkling of acknowledgment.
We allow a come back because almost every one of us has fallen or will fall from grace, and we, too, hope we can make a come back, and because we understand how cruel and unfair it feels to be harshly judged by a society that doesn't know jack about how we really live.
No, I don't care for her music - never did. Don't care for the slutty image, but I could just be jealous. I don't know anything about her as a person or what struggles she may face in daily life -
And to be honest, I don't really care what she does, how, or why... and I have no idea what the fascination, love, or hatred are all about. I just felt like going on a rant. *LOL*

If only the media could put all that power and money behind stopping wars, corruption and general destruction of the planet. if they can convince the masses that she can sing then maybe they could put a G-string on the planet, Dye it's Hair Blonde and they would support it.
Imagine if all the money fans spent on Britney Cds actually went somewhere of consequence.
Good god, where did that come from? Went of on a little rant, John Doe was going to delete it then I thought, it enertains me?

I don't even know where to begin with mass media. This is the same media who went on and on about how goddamn dumb Al Gore was and when it became apparent that he was running for the political party of the media's choice, he became the next goddamn JFK and people bought into it hook, line and sinker. No questions. No reason why he was suddenly plastered everywhere you looked playing football with his daughter??? A daughter no one had even seen before??? A daughter who is married but suddenly spending every waking moment with daddy? COME ON! Dont get me wrong...I do not vote for either major political party and will vote only if I feel there is a half way worthy party running...which is to say rarely, I vote.
I just get so tired of forcefed, drive thru mentality. Their motto should be:
"Don't have time to make an informed opinion? That's OK, neither do millions of other people. We will do it for you...make your selections at the window. We will even make it easy for you...just pick the ones that are lit up green and ignore the rest. Have a good day!"
UGHHH...Now, JohnDoe...for your information...THAT was a rant. lol

Are we allowing a comeback or is the media forcefeeding it? People tend to sway whichever way the media wind blows...and right now, it is blowing up Britney's skirt.
She makes the media money whether we hate her or love her. But definitely more if we love her...so here we go.
I don't know the girl, I haven't met her, I don't know what she is like behind closed doors away from the glaring shine of the media's camera lens...but I am going to go out on a limb and say that if interviews I have seen and candid shots I have seen are any indication...well, I am going to guess that she is stupid in and out of the spotlight.
And in the words of Ron White..."If you have bad hearing, you can go to a dr and they will make you hear as good as you could when you were a child. If you have bad eyesight, you can have surgery and be able to see as well as you did as a child. But folks, you can't fix stupid."
It's actually nothing horribly personal against Britney. It is her image. An image of her choosing and her making. If that isn't how she really is, then great. I am really glad. But for God's sake, she could show some of her intelligence to the millions of girls who idolize her stupidity.

I feel sorry for the poor, luv. She is trailor-trash but she came a long way and then proved the old cliche that "you can take the girl out of the trailor..." and so on. But I think the new look and the balls that came with it were a great move, at least she put that no-talent loser in his place! She's a role model for passive women everywhere!
I dont think any responsible parent would hang out with the likes of Paris Hilton though! I think that is a careless publicity stunt, especially for someone whose parenting skills are already in question!
Great piece!!

Thank you for the compliment, I'm honored.
As for feeling sorry for Britney, I was thinking in general about the 'new' crop of stars, Lindsay, Paris, Britney, Jessica...and I realized something that has actually kind of made me feel a little sorry for them. I will say this once and then its back to bashing because I DO have a reputation to uphold here. *smile*
These girls are dumb. Literally. No one taught them anything about being strong women. I have watched Brit in interviews, I have watched several docos on all of them, because I feel, if you are going to bash someone, know your shit, (ha) and they have all been left to become physically lovely women without a drop of common sense on how to be strong, intellectual, 'take no shit' women. So, for that reason, I will commend Brit on dumping the damn loser.
My only concern is that somewhere...in the back of my mind...a suspicion is looming...and here it is:
The day before Brit filed, Kevin was in an interview talking about how much they love each other, etc. She was in an interview not long before that saying the same thing. She has a CD coming out and a tour about to start. She is the cashcow in the marriage. Is it possible that this divorce is all a publicity stunt? End marriage collect paycheck, end tour collect marriage sort of arrangement...I don't know. I doubt it but there is something unsettling about the whole thing.
I don't know, but I just can't see that in two weeks time, all of a sudden, everything in her life turns around. She has a great public relations team...that's all I know. That, and I am a VERY cynical person...lol
I believe you can take the girl out of the trailor park and I even think you can take the trailor park out of the girl.. I believe you can take the girl out of the stupid situation but I firmly do not believe you can take the stupidity out of the girl who got herself into that stupid situation to begin with. Prove me wrong, Brit...I want to believe...

The media has no conscience about who, what or anything they write about. News; worthy or not, is what they are after-whatever the target group is @ the time, is what they will aim @, in reporting/reading material. This week, standing in line @ the grocery store, I see that "People" magazine has a new "Collectors Issue", because it features the "Tomkat Wedding". Between no-talent Britney, K-Fed, Brangelina, Paris & Tomkat, & whoever's this week's Anorexia Poster Child, I am sick to death of what is considered newsworthy today. This used to be my favorite mag, because it provided the reader w/a great variety of material, from celeb stories, to a nobody's inspirational story. And the contenders are no better. Credible journalism has gone by the wayside, & as far as I'm concerned, the space taken up by these useless publications could be well-served by items of a more beneficial nature. We have performers who have been in the spotlight for years, who are still contributing to the music scene, but they are not on the front pages.....seldom even get a mention, because the target audience is primarily the younger set, & whoever is currently cawing @ them. And what makes me absolutely irate, is that the kids seem to go for anyone who's popular; not particularly because they even like the music. Young girls want to buy Brit's cologne, just because it has her name on it. Ask 50 % of them what it smells like, & they can't tell u. Hype, & the craving for it is what sells; forget quality & true appreciation for someone's talent & art. With that, I will stop w/my rant, & move on to your post on Xmas music, which will hopefully put me in a better mood.
Affectionately,
Moonbeam

has made her a big deal to us. Britney, Paris, Jessica.....all of those girls need to have a sit down with
umm let's say Tina Turner. Let her tell stories about Ike beating the shit out of her daily, and the struggles
she went through, and still have that body, that voice, that braun, and the brains. Artist like Tina, Dionne,
Sheryl Crow this is who they need to strive to be like. I beg Brit and her pals to Please, Please STAND
FOR SOMETHING....they really don't have a firm hold on anything that they believe in. We don't even
know what they believe in......It's not in their lyrics, music, news, commercials....nothing. So feeling
sorry? No I don't. John Mellencamp wrote "You have to stand for something or you're gonna fall for
anything" nuff said........

Exactly. I have nothing more to add. Well said.
Ok...just one thing but that's it. lol The sad truth is that you can't believe anything anymore. Media, somewhere along the way, became a tool to rake in the money, to sway public opinion on issues, etc.
It all reminds me of that scene in 'Chicago', 'They Both Reached for the Gun!'. All of the media is gathered around Roxy Hart and her lawyer on the courthouse steps giving a comment on the defense and behind the scenes it shows all the media hooked up to strings like puppets and the lawyer is controlling them...and soon they all start chanting, thereby writing, that forget the evidence! There was a struggle for the gun and that's how the man died, rather than by a scorned lover.
When will we start believing our own opinions over that of the media? Maybe if we did, if we started sending letters by the truckloads to the media everytime they misrepresented something, it would end and, in this case, Britney wouldn't get the time of day.
Now, on another note, Britney has been photographed at close range several times this week panty-less. How connived is that? Up to last week, the media shots of trailor park Britney were done pretty far away. Now all of a sudden they can get close enough to take pics up her skirt? Does anyone sense a publicity stunt here?? ( I was going to say "smell a publicity stunt but that was an unfortunate pun so I deleted it. *smile*) Was she ever photographed before like that? Nope. She sure wasn't.
Down with Britney! (in the sixties sense...)

Agreed! These girls wonder around aimless and from what we have seen recently, panty-less jumping from guy to guy, no values, morals, beliefs, goals, nothing. It is sad and disturbing. However, I will say this, in their defense...a lot of kids are being raised that way today. We do focus on them because they are in the spotlight...but it is everywhere.
I see it all the time at my kid's school. There is no respect for authority, no respect for sex, no common sense, no self respect or life skills being taught at all. Everyone being allowed to grow up without guidance in the name of allowing them to express themselves a.k.a. lazyassed parenting, is costing our country in ways that we will soon see the full impact of...and it won't be pretty.

I am with you all the way on that one! Even with this comeback, she is not the doe-eyed pretty girl she once was. She has lost the look that everyone fell in love with. There is a brassy, hard look that comes with going too far and doing too much. Some can toe the line and even step over it and still look fresh as a daisy but some people just don't have that ability...Brit is one of the latter.
I fully admit, I probably know more about what is going on with B.S. (suitable initials, don't you think?) than I do local news. Sad but true.
Thanks for stopping by!
