Voices' Review: Blue October, 'FOILED'.
October 21st 2006 00:38
I was having one of those horrible days. You know the kind where you leave to get some milk and you begin to think you should just keep driving…past the store, past the post office, past the floral shop until you get to the interstate and take off without looking back? I was about to the post office when “Hate Me” came on the radio. I cried it all out by the end of the song and felt like a new woman. I went out and got the CD the next day because I was hooked…or so I thought.
I popped the CD in on my way home from the store and was horribly disappointed. I skipped through track after track and hated almost every song. I slipped the CD into the back recesses of my massive CD collection and left it there for weeks. It didn’t matter, I wouldn’t listen to it again. I didn’t like it at all…or so I thought.
Today, I pulled it back out for another go. I fell deeply and passionately in love with this group. What made the difference? Headphones. The intimacy of hearing Justin Furstenfeld whisper into my ear as he did on ‘Drilled a Wire Through my Cheek’ was absolutely erotic.
Another track, ‘X Amount of Words’ is my personal favorite. It is a very tongue in cheek sort of look at mental disorders and their labels.
There is one small problem with volume that if you are like me and have to hear every word in the lyrics, this CD may be a problem for you. If you turn it up loud enough to hear the lyrics, the music will overpower you in places. However, this is eliminated listening to them on headphones.
TIP: I had a similar experience with Godsmack and the volume and did the same with them, now I love the CD. If you don’t care for the CD out loud and proud, then try listening to it on a portable device with headphones. You may change your mind…
