What Artist Disturbs You The Most?

November 9th 2006 14:42
I don't know if I can pick just one...but since I have to...it would have to be: MARILYN MANSON

Visit Marilyn Manson's website...but don't blame me if you become possessed...

He has boobs...SOMETIMES. I could handle all the time...but sometimes he has boobs. That is bizarre. His work is extremely sick punctuated with traces of insanity and vomit-inducing nasty nastiness. I do not need to know he can blow himself. Not something I need to know to go on with my life. In fact, it hinders my daily process if I think about it because I don't want that particular image in my head. This is why this man does it. That is the disturbing part of the whole deal to me. I, as a fan, go and buy his music. His goal is to fuck me up. I give him money, he fucks with my head. There is something very sadomasochistic to the whole deal. Not into it. I would scream like a little girly girl if I ever just came up on him all done up. I would. No shame. Just a fact.

Silliness aside, I also have to admit...I have a fascination. I consider him to be highly commercial, against his will. He fully intended to continue being what he started out as...a terrifying force for parents, especially Christian parents, to deal with. What he has become is the token shock rocker.

He is a bit of an enigma in the sense that he is part politician, religious fanatic (satanism is a religion, too) and seriously messed up individual who lays it all out there. He is honest about who he is and what he stands for. He is definitely thought-provoking. He has been called the last artist by an MTv correspondent, but is he really an artist? I am not sure. I have no answer for this one.

He repulses me...but I also respect him in some ways.

[B]So, who does this for you? What group/artist/performer freaks you out and why? Try to share the freakage with some linkage, if possible.

First thought that popped into my head... Alice Cooper, and that's not even fair! I've never listened with intent to Alice Cooper, my opinion is based on a vibe, one that also applies to Marilyn Manson.

It isn't so much specific artists I have issues with, but I do have issues with artists who pop out hit songs, but suck when trying to sing live. If the computer made the music, the artist shouldn't get the credit or the pay.

I'm not so offended by sexual content, although it certainly has reached a point I consider extreme, but I really cannot stand the rap "music" that boasts of drug deals, cop killing, and a life of crime or gang activity. Those songs urk me.

I hate "bubble gum" music where it's the artist's image being sold more than the talent in the music - cheesy lyrics, exotic costumes, expensive choreography - cookie cutter copies of one another - Hillary Duff, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and even Hulk Hogan's daughter. I'm not saying there's no talent in this group, but that they're products of multi-media million dollar moguls who care more about bottom dollar than they do preserving artful music. I miss the "good old days" when songs had lyrics you could understand and wanted to sing along with. *LOL*

Boy bands. No thanks.

There are certain artists and/or songs that hurt my feelings or bring back unpleasant memories, but that usually has nothing to do with the artist/song and everything to do with the trigger of "time travel" down memory lane when heard.

What was that chick's name that sang Gloria back in the eighties? Not sure why, but she got on my nerves... and so does Nelly Furtado, who I call "Nelly Omelette" 'cause her last name sounds like fritatta. I'm not sure why they are like nails on a chalk board to me, but they are.

Could it be something lke Laura Branigon? I know I didn't spell it right, but sounds like. I have no idea what my issue with her was, but she made my skin crawl. I have no reason. Don't even think she reminded me of anyone and her song(s) didn't trigger any memories. Must be the vibe thing again.

Wendi,
Yes, Laura Branigan sang Gloria...I actually liked that song but that was it...(she's deceased, y'know.)

You and your vibe thing -(as I started writing this...I was going to go in a totally different direction but I didn't. Aren't you proud of me?)- need to tune in to Layne Staley and tell him to contact the official AIC website and tell them to post my damn story about him. He would have liked that story...they won't post it or any links to it because they don't want to focus on that part of Layne's life. I say they are robbing Layne by not focusing on it. If the man could perform that brilliantly while battling the addiction he had...he was tremendously talented...people need to know that... Oh well. I actually don't want them to have anything to do with my story now...piss on 'em.

*Voices is officially done with her fit...or as when in Oz...spitting the dummy.*

Isn't Gloria about schitzophrenia ...?
I have a soft spot for that track too ...
"the alias, that you've been living under ..."
Most disturbing "artist" would be GG Allin. The late punk rocker. He was one FUCKED-UP dude.
Those boy bands scare me though .... N'Sync, Take That, Back Street Boys, Human Nature .... eeeek!

Bryn,
You know I am not going to let you off that easy. Give details. What about him was so fucked up, for people who aren't familiar. Spill it...

'Gloria' was a very confusing song. I could see where the lyrics could be taken that way...I can also see it being a song about a girl with problems...period. It could also be about a girl with a self esteem problem. At least we have that settled...'Gloria' is about a troubled girl.

As for the boy bands...*shudder*...that would be my idea of torture to be locked in a room with nothing but boy bands...

Hello Voices The Vivacious...

I liked 'Gloria' and 'Self Control'...I'm so not with it...oh hang on...scroll up...yes...you liked 'Gloria'...okay, hanging on to cool by a frayed thread here...

Justin Timberlake.
Do not get him, his voice, his smugness, how he's considered sexy (gag me), why his skinny ass thinks he can dole out advice on how to be a man...I mean...come on...what? just because he's schtupping (is this a real word? I got it off a movie...) Diaz, doesn't make him The Lord of The Schwing...

Missy Elliot
Yes...know she's supposed to be cool and brilliant, blah, blah, boring but her lyrics offend me...I don't get how it's okay to champion the cause of female empowerment by calling women "crazy hos" and that they should get their freak on by wearing copious amounts of designer trash just so they can get dick.

Mick Jagger
Am a fan but he repluses me. His lips, his gaunt frame, his lollipop head...how did Bianca and Jerry do it? And how did he get them??

Brian Warner...disturbs me.
He shouldn't have messed with 'Tainted Love'. Soft Cell classic.

Haven't seen you around for a while Voices my sweet. Hope you are well.
Um...are we still betrothed?
No?
It's okay...sob...I understand...it's because I like 'Self Control' isn't it?...

DuskDevi,
Of course we are, sweetie...what would ever give you the mind (MO) to think we arent? *wink*

Brian, brian, brian...I hated to say he disturbed me for several reasons...
1. it's very expected. Who wouldn't be? I do like to be different...and with all these voices, I do stand a good chance. But it's true.
2. He wants me to be.
3. He has been out there being so freakish for so long that he really isn't out of the norm anymore...but still.

I haven't been around to visit all my fave bloggers save a few. I have very limited time right now, just started back to school with a full time load. God help me.

DuskDevi, -(may I call you Devi? Since we are to be married soon, I should have a nickname for you, shouldn't I?) -we have very similar thoughts...I do not like anyone being put up on a pedestal because they say the unexpected. Missy fits that bill. Lil Kim is another one. Her lyrics are so offensive that they get no airtime but she has millions of fans. People get off on trash. 'Tis sad but true.

I have seen some of his stuff and you are definitely right...very disturbing. The most disturbing is the defacating on stage and smearing it all over himself. The video of his funeral and everything that was done, also disgustingly disturbing. His work was not so much music as it was loathing and contempt for everything and everyone. It is often suggested that he had multiple personality disorder...

When I first moved here, I had to make a business call and the gentleman on the other end of the phone introduced himself as (sounds like) Key-Yen.

I have a thing for names, especially unique names I've never heard before, so I asked him to repeat it.

Key-Yen.

I say it back to him.

Key-Yen?

He says, "At's right. Key-Yen."

I ask, "How do you spell that?"

He replies, "K-e-n, just like it sounds... Key-Yen"

Well, I don't know why more people haven't broken the implicit rule and named non-musical artists -- or art.

What comes to mind when I think about the question is a doco I saw recently -- called "Metal: A headbanger's journey" -- an overview of metal. And the most disturbing thing in that was the cover of a CD that had devil's spawn ripping out of a woman's mouth, vagina, and stomach.

TS Eliot once said something about the most awful thing being the death of a beautiful woman...

Mutilations, snuff films, bodies lying on the ground after they've been flattened by tanks or have fallen from tall buildings, or have been aborted -- I think I find this sort of art the most disturbing.

I think there is another implicit rule that more people ought to break, and that is to not agree that just because someone does something provocative and calls it art and themselves artists doesn't make it art.
We are so afraid to argue this point anymore and quite frankly, it gets on my nerves.

Shit in a can is not now, nor has it ever been ART. A picture of a cambell soup can is NOT art. It's a picture of a soup can. I can do that with my eyes closed...I don't need to pay money to see it or elevate it to some rediculous level to prove my intelligence.

She is just so unjustly vain. On the 'Smoking Gun' website, I think it was, she requests any locale that she visits, to use pink low wattage lightbulbs wherever she sits...really pay attention. It is hard to find a left side shot of her...apparently she thinks her right side is her "good side". Pay attention to any picture you see of her...it will drive you crazy. lol I really don't know if its just a fluke, I don't research anything about her. Couldn't care less, really. Two more things that irritate me about her: 1.) her boobs. Voices,

Smiling till my jaw aches here at the Humphrey graphic ... and that you would research him ...

Since you like him so much, here is the link to Humphrey's Official Website:

http://www.humphreybbear.com/index.html

You can play games, draw and sing along with Humphrey ...

Humphrey B Bear has his own show over here on Channel 9. It's been going since the mid 60s.

He is known as 'the fun loving Bear' but due to some indiscretions by the person inside the suit, some people refer to him as 'the bum loving Bear'.

The opening jingle to his show is:

What a funny old fellow is Humphrey
He gets in all manner of strife ...
He leads a very exciting life ...
and honey's his favourite food.

Move over AIC lyricist ...

Homer ...

Lingering as always ...

I must say, I agree definitely with everything said about our dear Marilyn. His puppy-killing ways are bordering on absolutely filthy. Perhaps someone should call animal protection? I think Alice Cooper is a bit less crazed and disturbing in the way he looks, and most definitely his music is not too disturbing at all.

Now, I want to introduce to you a concept - James Brown. WOW! Okay, he may sound pretty damn funky, but by the power invested in me by the almighty, he looks like a drag queen on something, something very strong.

Of course, then there are the artists whose lyrics/attitudes are disturbing, note: blink182, Panic! At The Disco, Green Day. Yes, your comfortable upper/middle-class existence, backed by capitalism (HA! Green Day) borders on absolute hilarity when they cry about it. Now thats disturbing.

Thanks for letting me have a little rant now...
Nice work with the blog, interesting reading.

Kylar,
Yeah, I am pretty sure...(although I do hate to judge...but its not really judging when its just a damn fact, is it?)...Marilyn is going to Hell.

JAMES BROWN...(bowing)...Kylar, Kylar, Kylar...abso-friggin-lutely. The man freaks me out! I don't know whether to laugh or cry, honestly. All due respect to his work and contribution and all that...no disputing it. But oh my god..he does look like an aged, plastic-injected Tyra Banks.

Panic! at the Disco...they are a little scary but in a great way.

Anytime you would like to have a rant, come back,

I agree with Homer, Humphrey Bear is creepy. How is a bear that doesn't speak supposed to help kids learn?

MatthewB,
uhmm, yeah, I would have to agree. How old is this guy and when was he in a boy band because he looks a bit old to be a boy bander and other than that, just odd.
Robbie Williams-Wikipedia (Boy bander or Child Predator?)
I have never heard any of his stuff, but I am going to go out on a limb and say, ewwww.

Tracy,
We have Barney the Dinosaur and people tie him to their front fender like they ran him over. We are not a nice bunch of people over here in the States. *smile*
Barney-Wikipedia
Some poor kid could be traumatized but we don't care, 'cause we are soooooo funny. (I laughed when I saw it...I admit it.) Barney's theme song is:

"I love youuuu, You love meeee
We're a happy familyyyyy"

We sing it like this:

"I love youuuu, You love meeee
Let's tie Barney to a treeeee..."

(I laughed when I heard it...I admit it.)

Whoa, there's some great picks here. Bryn beat me to the punch with GG Allin (Bryn, you should see Hated. It's disturbing and funny. A mate of mind thinks the whole thing is staged--it's THAT good).

I actually enjoy some of GG's work. "I Wanna Fuck Myself" is a great song, and that's about as tame as his stuff gets. If GG ever met Marilyn Manson, Marilyn would shit his panties and turn to god, I swear. And you don't wanna know what GG would do with those panties afterwards.

Another guy who scares me is Varg Vikernes (also known as Count Girshnack) from black metal band Burzum (actually, he IS the band). This guy's still in jail for stabbing his best friend to death and burning down churches. I like the guy's music, even though I wouldn't want to meet him, even in a really well lit alley.

Oh yeah, and any openly Nazi band like Screwdriver scares me more than Mazza ever could.

I agree with the choice of Robbie Williams, MatthewB. I'm not a fan but he actually appeals to me in a weird way. I did a post about this a while ago which you can find here (if its ok with Voices, of course).

I know this is not really music related and this person probably is considered an artist now because of this..

BUT from what I understand..

Chopper Reid writes children books. Im not sure if actual children read them.. but the idea of a serial killer writing children books FREAKS me out.

When I was in Melbourne, there are also Chopper nuts in vending machines! Still too freaky for me to handle..

See the movie if you haven't yet and you will understand!

Whatever,
Oh dear god...what would disturb me more is that parents would buy them. I could probably imagine the people lining up to buy them...dumbasses. These will be the same people who will get in front of a news camera and say,

"Sweetie, we taught you better than this...come out of the school with the gun now...we just have no idea why he/she turned out this way..."

Damo,
Dali's art is fascinating...and you summed it up quite well, perverse views...of everything. It is probably a case of genius vs. insanity. A fine, thin line between the two that Dali walked, wasn't it?

Hellvis,
It is amazing to me at the levels of disturbance of some of the artists mentioned on this post. While I am not sure I would call Varg Vikernes an artist, he is definitely disturbed. He looks even more disturbing in his short hair as compared to earlier days. Something very Hitleresque to the look now.

Thanks for sharing and as always, come back,

Whatever,

Calling Chopper a serial killer is a bit alarmist. Chopper hasn't actually been convicted of any murders that I know of, and most of his violence was directed at other criminals. This certainly doesn't make him any less of a bastard, but there's something endearing about him. He's sort of a modern Ned Kelly.

He has his own beer too, and he has recorded several albums. I think his latest was a rap CD.

In general, I find the work of these disturbed underground figures fascinating. Marilyn's music is a little too contrived to be truly disturbing, but I think he makes a nice counterpoint to the equally fabricated figures of the pop world.

Hellvis,
According to Wikipedia, I believe it did say he had admitted to the killings and several others, that he has made numerous references to the things he has done in his books, etc. I would need to read it again...and do a bit more digging. I could only skim it earlier. Right now, I am in the middle of a 2000 word essay on if it is reasonable to believe in the existence of a personal, loving God. Pray for me...(and then tell me to whom you are praying and why you are doing it and why you think it is reasonable to do so....come on...be a friend.)

I do see what you are saying about Marilyn, though. He is not disturbing in a fearful way in terms of fearing bodily harm from him as you might GG Allen and others. But there is something almost desperate about him that bothers me. As though if he didn't get his point across by blowing himself on stage then maybe he will do something worse...and then again, maybe that is exactly what he wants us to think.

Voices~
