What's Your Pleasure?

November 3rd 2006 00:14
I do not know as much as some people do...I can't tell you all of the members names of Alice in Chains. I can't tell you who the drummer is that plays in that band I don't know. There is a lot about music that I don't know.

What I do know...is that music is the greatest pleasure of my life. I may not know the name of a song that fits a particular situation in someone's life or my own for that matter. But I know that when I hear a new artist (to me), that I am so passionately excited I have to share it with everyone...my mom, my daughter who couldn't care less if it isn't the top 40, my friend who is ladders and tiers above me in music knowledge, my co-workers...you.

I know that when I listen to Layne Staley sing, I can tell you what stage of his addiction he is in. I cry when I hear a poignant song about pain and suffering. I dance my ass off to Justin Timberlake's 'SexyBack'. I squeal with delight when I hear Styx, 'Renegade'. I sing at the top of my lungs with Jonny Lang.

My greatest pleasure in the world, my bliss, is music.

I sometimes will buy a CD at random, of an artist I have never heard of, not knowing whether I will like it or not. I bought Silverstein this week. HATED THEM. They made noises I haven't ever heard before. But it wasn't a total loss, I liked the CD jacket. My point is that music is my salvation.

I am never without it. I have two enormous CD cases. One of them is completely packed, holding about 250 CD's and another one that is getting just as full. My greatest joy at work, is to pull out a CD I haven't given a proper listen to, slide it in and listen. All the way through, no skipping to the next track. I have learned that hating it on the first listen is not fair. Mood, emotion, experience all connects us to our music. My experience, mood and emotion may not be suited to the CD at the moment. I will put it away and pull it out again when circumstances are different. It is rare that I will not have a new appreciation for it.

I love learning new things, I love reading your comments. All of you, my family, should see my reaction to your comments. Whether I agree or not, it is orgasmic to someone like me to have people like you share your passion with me.

Tell me about your most memorable experiences with discovering a new artist. Who did you tell? What was their reaction to it? What was your reaction to it? What was your reaction to their reaction...you know how it works by now...tell me everything!

Hey Voices,

Like you, my collection is voluminous... and like you, I listen through... all the way, on the first run. Do you often find the one that you really didn't like much the first run through, ends up being your favourite over time...? Without doubt. That's how it was for me recently with Shaun Mullins and now I cannot get enough. I love his lyrics, his tunes, his style, his grace, his ability to make me feel... something...nothing... everything.... mostly just something.

To me this man scrapes the very depth of life and the human barrel of hardship and joy and comes up without harsh judgement on his fellow man, or the state of things - as they are - or are to come. He sings of ethics, known right and wrongs...all from the heart... and all about being on the road... the wheels are always turning in his songs...

...All very inspiring for me...

I only had Souls Core and a friend just sent me (9th Finger Plickin' [or whatever it's called - you know 'm not big on remembering names])... I'm like a kid with a new toy....

I hate mentioning the same people over and over, but who cares. I love MUSIK, my life does have
a soundtrack. I relate to everything by song. Real quick, I told you the other day about 2 Mother Love
Bone songs I loved and I only gave you the lyrics to 1 - Crown of thorns, the other one was man of
golden words, this is pretty weird lyrics in comparison of what you just wrote.
" I want to tell you something like the joy inside my heart, seems I been living in the temple of the dog.
Where would I live if I were a man of golden words? And would I live at all?
Words and Music, my only tools, communication
On her arrival I will set free the birds, It's a pretty time of year, and the mountains sing out loud.
Tell me Mr Golden Words, how's about the world? Tell me can you tell me at all?
Words and music, my only tools, communication
Let's fall in love with music, the driving force of our living
The only international language, Divine glory, the expression
The knees bow, the tongue confesses
The lord of lords, the king of kings
Words and music, my only tools, communication."
All I can say is WOW!!!!! The most memorable moment I have, is I was on my way to work, and at the
time I worked 3p - 11p, and 93.5 played a new song everynight at 10 or 1030 something like that.
Anyway I heard Shimmer - by fuel, the next day I bought the CD, and was very excited. I made friends
go riding around with me so they could here this band. It was great. I love it that I have a way to go
off about music everyday if I want to - thanks to you voices. You fuckin ROCK!!!!!

Lilla,
Absolutely I find that to be true. When I got Blue October, like I said in one of my posts, it was not my favorite. I skipped through all the tracks and put it away, actually never intending to listen to it again. But god am I glad I did listen to it again...I so appreciate their work now.

Another CD this happened with is the new Jonny Lang, 'Turnaround.' At first, although the music was beautiful, the arrangements, the vocals and all of that were absolutely top notch, the lyrics kind of turned me off. After a couple songs, I was thinking, "COME ON...Happy for ya...move on." And then, I got hooked on "Just a Man"...so I kept listening...and now, I just get chills. I love that he poured out his soul for us...let us come in and get aquainted, was really honest about his life and experiences. That is the biggest turn on to me as a fan...just getting to see the person. I have to know they are real and honest about their reality before they will get my respect.

I need to be made to feel something...whatever it is..like you said. I don't care if an artist ribs the scars off of something, pours salt in the wound and laughs about doing it, if they can make me feel something, other than revulsion, they have me.

As always, Lilla,

Tinkster,
Alright, alright...I am checking them out tonight...you have convinced me!

I think that may be my favorite part of music...just sharing it. Watching somebody go..."OH MY GOD, I love them!" And you just sit there and nod your head, "Yeah, I know..."

Voices,

So true and now I am on my way to listen to this J Lang album because now, I MUST!

I'll let you know wheither i buy it or not...

a thought: Do you think ageism in 'real music' is non-existent if appreciation of the true core value is appreciated as you say...

I don't care if an artist ribs the scars off of something, pours salt in the wound and laughs about doing it, if they can make me feel something, other than revulsion, they have me...

Well said...

Lilla,
I am going to give some more thought to your question but wanted to let you know that I wasn't ignoring the question.

As for Jonny, please do let me know if you liked it. Again, I cannot say enough good things about him. His older music is my favorite. But I did love the honesty of this new album, as I said. I am so glad you are giving him a chance. My favorite track is 'Just a man'. If you have the opportunity, give a listen.

" I can feel the emptiness inside me fade and disappear
There's a feeling of contentment now that you are here....."
This is the way I feel about my favorite band in the world: Depeche Mode. The lyrics above belong to them.
I discovered them through my classmates in 8th grade, so I guess you can say it's an obsession that goes way back. Most of my girlfriends were absolutely crazy about Dave's voice.... I remember when I bought my first tape with their music, I was shopping with my mother and heard this divine voice singing "World in my eyes", I just had to have that tape and managed to convince my mother to buy it for me. That was more than 10 years ago and I still have that tape, "Violator". I've been ridiculed for my taste in music, people would ask me "Depeche who, I thought they were dead already", but who cares, I like their music and in this matter other people's opinions have no importance.
My other pleasure is books, I love reading and I feel incomplete if I don't have time to read a few pages every day, it's like something's missing from my life.....

WELL,

Probably Pete Murray and Youth Group are the most memorable because they were fresh meat when I started to like them.

One of my colleagues got me onto Pete way before most people knew who he was. Of course I spread the gospel to everyone I knew and 3 years later he is massive here. To be sure, greatness evaporates.

Youth Group was great at a random festival in the middle of Sydney Harbour. A friend and I saw them probably 2 years ago now and I said to her 'these guys are going to be big in a year'.. da duh... Does anyone feel forever young?

I cant say its anything specific to how it is memorable, except how it makes you feel at the time. It cant just be a be a coincidence.

WE,
You know, I have a friend who often lets me know about a group or a song, something that she thinks I would like a lot. She got me started on Alice in Chains. I know exactly what you mean about the feeling...I do that too...I think we probably all do, in some respects.

When I heard AIC for the first time, it was just BAM. Magic right between the eyes. I grieved the loss of Layne immediately...I knew right then what we lost.

Pretty good quote don't you think?

Yes very good song. There is a few of them I like, and I have never bought any cd of them yet.
I remember liking "people are people" when I was about 13 or 14. I liked them then, and I still do.
I think I will go music shopping this weekend. What do you suggest? A greatest hits or what?
Thanks for helping me branch out......

I wanted to answer you yesterday, Tinkster, but my computer decided otherwise.
Yes, a greatest hits is a good idea but I also recommend the two albums I love the most: "Volator" and "Songs of Faith and Devotion". Now that I remember, you can also find lots of videos to watch on youtube.com Enjoy!

Pilgrim,
I haven't gotten their music, yet, but I will probably this next weekend. I had a flashback...

******************************************************************
GEEK MOMENT * GEEK MOMENT * GEEK MOMENT *
When I was fifteen, I had to model in this runway show *cringe* and I had to get my walk down...which was supposed to be angry meets sexually frustrated, I think it was, so I THINK I got some DM...did they have a song in 1987 that was getting some major airplay that had a really heavy thump to it? I could have sworn I bought the CD or probably the cassette..lol to walk to. *cringe*
******************************************************************

Come back, I've become much cooler since then.. *smile*

I can't think of the song you are describing but as far as I know there wasn't anything with "a really heavy thump to it" at that time.

Why do you call it a geek moment? I think it must have been pretty cool (*smile*).
I'll be back....

Pilgrim,
I repeat...I was modeling in a fashion show...definite geek moment for me. lol You should have seen my hair. They had to raise the roof by three inches to get it to fit...*smile*

I will have to dig and see if I can find the name of the song, but I sure thought it was DM.

"Personal Jesus" came out in 1990 ( love that song, by the way).
Could it be "Never let me down again", "Strange Love" or "Behind the Wheel"? These three have a certain rhythm....
Voices, take your pick (*smile*).

My latest discovery is Lady Sovereign, she's really shameless, so much that it makes me laugh, I like pop music that makes you feel that way. My Bloody Valentine in my stereo at the moment.

MatthewB,
*clapping my hands* Oh I feel the same way about pop music...I laugh and laugh and laugh when they call themselves artists! *smile*

If you get the chance stop by my friend, Bryn's site, Horrophile. Read the post, 'Celebrity Slaughter'. I really got into that one...lol

Again, I will check out Lady Sovereign. I love that you mention music I haven't heard before...

Thanks, and come back, as always.
