Who's Your Favorite 80's Hair Band?
December 9th 2006 02:28
There is nothing in the world that will get me school girl giddy (catholic uniform, if that helps you pervs out there with an image), than a really great heavy metal song from the '80's. I have memories for all of them...especially Cinderella.
Cinderella. Lead singer, Tom Keifer, has the sexiest voice with that ragged edge to it that just goes down my spine every time I hear him. I loved their music! 'Night Songs' and 'Shake Me' are personal favorites. (The latter gets me in a very headbanging mood of a different sort.)
Take a listen and then you will know why...or at least, you know, if you are ever having a conversation with someone about what turns me on...you can say you know first hand...you know, if that should ever come up.
I don't know if it was the music, the drag-like quality of the fashion, or the meaningless lyrics but god, I loved hair bands back in the day and I still do. I loved Guns 'N' Roses, Warrant, Poison, Motley Crue, Ratt, Def Leppard, Twisted Sister, to name a few.
There is a really great revival of old music lately, a celebration of those who have been rocking without ceasing, like Cinderella and Poison who are touring together in celebration of 20 years of ROCK, a rebirth of those old greats that were responsible for the sound of a genre like Malfunkshun, who announced in October of this year that they are reforming and Alice in Chains, who have reformed and are currently touring. This is an exciting time in music, my friends.
Celebrate with me and tell me...who was your all time favorite hair band? Favorite song? Favorite video? Lyrics? I've shown you mine...now it's your turn.

Oh, the nostalgic value of really bad hair!
In the eighties, the flick layered hair that has made a comeback today was mocked, and in turn, the BIG 80's hair is a joke today.
I wasn't into Glam Metal, but my 80's favs still deserve a mention -
Robert Smith - The Cure
Actually - Everyone from The Cure
Depeche Mode
Melanie Griffith in "Working Girl" - the before AND after
Linsey Bluth High School Year Book "Best Hair" picture - Arrested Development

I see you got Youtube working. Good stuff. Will have to wait til I go into uni to view the Cinderella video, because my internet conection at home is just too slow.
I was never really into the whole hair metal thing cuz I guess I was just too young. It wasn't until the early '90s when I started to be interested in music, and by then Nirvana and the 'grunge revolution' had 'slayed the hair-damn dragon' as I think Henry Rollins once said. It's not my favourite style of music, but I've come tp appreciate the cheesiness and good time hedonism of some of these bands.
I remember being in primary school and there being a kid a few classes below me who wore a Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet t-shirt to school once. I thought he was the toughest, meanest kid at school and was scared of him. Strange how your perceptions get warped when your a kid. Bon Jovi are a bunch of teddy bears compared to some of the stuff I like now.
I have more to say on this matter, but will wait til I'm less hungover.

You have no idea...I had the biggest hair in three towns...I kid you not. Aqua Net hairspray was not only a tool, it was a friend.
I am always amazed at people who say that they weren't into glam metal. I mean, it could be the years and years of Aqua Net buid up in my ears, but I loved their music.
They were all pretty much little boys with big hair...Compared to what is going on in today's music, glam hair bands are role models.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your fave music with me...

As I said to Doll, compared to what is going on in music today, these bands were very mild.
They brought a certain theatrical quality to the stage, reminicent of KISS. It was a tad shocking. My mother wanted nothing to do with that sort of music and today, I torture her by going over there and putting some of that stuff in and make her listen to it on a regular basis. lol
Bon Jovi. I can't believe I forgot to mention Bon Jovi. I just got 'Crossroads' not too long ago and oh my god, I am just on it. Love them...they were very different than typical hair bands...their songs were not about nailing some girl in a bathroom unlike Cinderella and Motley Crue. Their songs were about stories...it was like John Mellencamp meets Motley Crue with those guys.
Cinderella was my pick back in the day...but I really love Bon Jovi today...they will be around forever.

It's 11:30pm and I still feel like crap. There is a car alarm going off outside my window which is making dogs bark. I wish they'd hurry up and steal the bloody thing already and drive it away from here. The noise is driving me insane, and I usually LIKE noise.

*whispering* uhmmm, go throw something at the dogs that are barking, which will enrage them to think the theives are doing it and cause them to attack the theives which will make them leave faster...in the car.

Poison is probably my favorite, but Cinderella was probably the most talented. Great singing, great guitar playing and the country influences made them unique.
The only thing I'd take issue to is calling GN'R a hair metal band. There are similarities there, but I think they stuck too close to the Led Zeppelin mold -- and incorporated too much punk -- to really fit. In fact, the record company had to twist MTV's arm to get them to play the "Jungle" video at first, because the band didn't belong alongside Ratt et al.
Def Leppard objects to the label as well, though they're definitely "80s pop-metal" and some of them had a lot of hair.

I'm glad you stopped by..
As for GnR and DL, I agree that they were a different breed of metal. But they still had and still do have a lot of the influences in their music of that genre...that can't be disputed. GnR was one of the first to move in a different direction. Def Leppard has a very different sound and has evolved from just being a part of the glorious hair band era.
However, both still have to thank the genre, without it, they wouldn't have been accepted at all, save a cult following. Their talent is undisputed. Although, Axl's vocal range is not what it used to be. I seen them perform live and it lacked the old magic, I thought. But still, even so, hats off.

Sorry, I'm another one who wasn't really into the heavy stuff (as you can probably tell by my choice of Spandau) ... more of a romantic, I guess.
I also loved A-ha and Howard Jones as an impressionable teenager (yes, I know, I'm going to be vilified for this).
They did all have hair, though, and lots of it.
Actually, so did I. My daughter recently saw a picture of me (and my hair) from the 80s and asked if I was wearing a wig. How can you explain to a youngster what the 80s was all about? They just wouldn't understand.
Loved the post ... brought back some great memories.

From authentic 80's band definitely INXS is my favorite . I'm surprised nobody of you Australians mentioned this band.
Later comes , RHCP , Nirvana , Alice in Chains
I've never liked those "hairy" 80's bands as they always looked like clowns for me .

few could have predicted the revivals of 60's and 70's fashion.
I predict that big hair and tight pants will take off againlike never before.
I'm starting to think that the boys from Whitesnake could be assuming the role of my hair-stylist.
Rockin' on in tight pants and hair spray,

Siouxie and the Banshees
Terry Hall from Fun Boy Three
Johnny Lydon Sex Pistols and PIL
Jesus and Mary Chain
and
Ian McCulloch from Echo and the Bunnymen
Nick Cave
Morrissey
although the last three were scruffy hairstyles rather than huge ones really....I'm sure there are more but they are the ones that popped into my head straighaway.
I have to include a pic of Robert Smith....

Hey, anyone who brings back those memories for you counts. This post was actually a little more about nostalgia for me than the actual bands. Quiet Riot, KISS, DL, AC/DC and all hair bands take me back to the best time of my life...being a teenager and just blaring my music like an offering to the Gods that be...it was just the best time and forever those times will live on in my head to the tunes of these bands.

"Sometimes you're better off dead
There's gun in your hand and it's pointing at your head
You think you're mad, too unstable
Kicking in chairs and knocking down tables
In a restaurant in a West End town
Call the police, there's a madman around
Running down underground to a dive bar
In a West End town
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
West End girls
Too many shadows, whispering voices
Faces on posters, too many choices
If, when, why, what?
How much have you got?
Have you got it, do you get it, if so, how often?
And which do you choose, a hard or soft option?
(How much do you need?)
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
West End girls
West End girls
(How much do you need?)
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
Oooh West End town, a dead end world
East End boys, West End Girls
West End girls
You've got a heart of glass or a heart of stone
Just you wait 'til I get you home
We've got no future, we've got no past
Here today, built to last
In every city, in every nation
From Lake Geneva to the Finland station
(How far have you been?)
In a West End town, a dead end world
The East End boys and West End girls
A West End town, a dead end world
East End Boys, West End girls
West End girls
West End girls
West End girls
(How far have you been?)
Girls
East End boys
And West End girls
And West End girls

that hair. WOW! Simple Minds was another great 80's group. "Dont you forget about me"...the
Breakfast Club...I might have to do some lyrics. One of my favorietes is the Cure...Just like Heaven
"show me , show me, show me how you do that trick, the one that makes me scream she said
the one that makes me laugh she said, and threw her arms around my neck. Show me how you
do it, and I promise you I promise that I'll run away with you. Spinning on that dizzy edge, i kissed
her face and kissed her neck and dreamed of all the different ways I had to make her glow. Why
are you so far away, she said. Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you, that I'm in love
with you. You..soft and only, you....lost and lonely, you...strange as angels, dancing in the
deepest oceans, twisting in the water you're just like a dream. Just like a dream.
Daylight licked me into shape, I must have been asleep for days. And moving lips to breathe her
name, I opened up my eyes. I find myself alone, alone, alone above a raging sea that stole the
only girl I loved and drowned her deep inside of me.
You...soft and only
You....lost and lonely
You.....just like heaven
that is some good stuff right there. Yeah it's tinkster. And another WOW on that hair

Oh my god, can I tell you how refreshing and exceedingly rare it is to find someone else who not only remembers Cinderella, but liked them???? I loved Cinderella also (I vaguely recall them being the support act when I went to see Bon Jovi in about 1986).
My other favourites were Poison, Skid Row, Guns n Roses, White Snake and Def Lepard (mmm.....Joe Elliot, god I loved him).
In fact, it was only a short while ago that my sister and I embarked on a road trip and as a special surprise she popped Def Lepard's 'Best Of' cd into the cd player. Lordy, lordy, how many good songs they had. I could barely speak by the end of the road trip I had sung so loud. 'Love Bites'......ahhh, what a song.
God I hope that Cinderella and Poison come to Australia!! I'll be there for that.

Motorhead were awesome and Lemmy is god, but Motley Crue were a bit of a letdown. It might have had something to do with the fact that the venue was run like a concentration camp, with security stalking the fence they had put up in the standing area between us and those who had paid an extra $50 to suck on the cock rock.
The worst part was when Tommy Lee got out his titty cam. This was basically designed to humiliate women into showing their breasts to the audience. The camera would linger on a woman in the audience until everyone cheered and hollered at her to flash a bit of tit. I like boobs as much as the next man, but that was just gross.
